Hey guys obviously I am new to this so I am not sure where to start but I came across a really old, at least I think so, 38 special CTG. I know it has been around for a while but I have not seen one with this finish so it has me wondering. There is no letters in the serial number starts with a 637***. I will try to post a picture here. Any information would be a great help. Thanks guys.

The weapon is nickel plated with pearl handles. Like I said everything I have seen is blued. Pease lete know.

With very little to go on and no pic, odds are your "CTG" is a Military & Police (M&P) from the forties, possibly just post-war.

Upload it to photobucket, then copy/paste into your thread.
If the finish is chrome and not nickel, it has been refinished. Odds are very slim that it shipped with pearl grips.

First off, welcome to the forum.

As noted in the preceding post, "CTG" is an abbreviation for "cartridge" and thus this marking on the barrel denotes the caliber only, and is not the model designation.

It sounds as if this is a Military & Police model. If so, that serial number dates it to around the mid-1930's. I agree with the previous post that a nickel finish with pearl grips is unlikely to be the original configuration, but with Smith & Wessons, it's best to never say "never."

Absolutely need to see at least a photo (preferably several) to make more definitive comments.

Nickel was an option but very possible it's been refinished. Are hammer and trigger plated? Sure sign of refinish as S&W didn't plate these parts.

That serial would be from around 1930 or so.

If working OK but refinished it's worth $150-$200 as a shooter. If good original finish double that amount.

The hammer and trigger are not plated looks all original and very well kept. Everything is functional.

Thanks for posting them for me. I'm not to sure if it was redone or not, but I really don't think so. It has been in my grandmothers storage for about 30 years. It belong to her father. I assume from the precious post it was from about the 1930's is that correct?

The nickel plating is of the factory applied style. The pearl stocks are pretty obviously (based on fit and contour) not original, but I don't think that's much to the gun's detriment as a collectible if it's been that way for many years.

The only way to be really certain if the gun was shipped in nickel finish will be to get a factory letter.

I have one similar w/o the faux pearl grips (they might be Jay Scott's) If that is original nickel.. maybe it's worth $300.
Mine is M&P model 1905 2nd change from 1906.. a little older but basically the same gun. SW made that gun from the about 1900 until... today!
