I have a 38 smith and wesson nickel and I would like to know the age and value when I flip the cylinder open on the inside it has 1899 stamped in the frame of the gun and on the barrel it has 38 s&w special & us service ctgs

Sounds like a .38 Special Military & Police revolver. It’s probably close to 100 years old.

Please note the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame. That said, if your gun has all original parts it is very likely a .38 Military & Police model from about 1902-1905.

Photos would help for a value estimate.

The dual caliber stamping on the barrel is a tipoff that it is either a Hand Ejector, Model of 1902 (round butt) or a Model of 1905 (square butt). It is known that it was probably first used around 1904, and stopped at around 1907-08 at a SN close to 133000. The "US Service Cartridge" is the .38 Long Colt, very similar to the .38 S&W Special, except it has a slightly shorter case. At the time it was the official US military revolver cartridge. A picture and the serial number stamped on the butt would be helpful for better identification.

I have a 1905 HE square butt with the dual caliber markings....
serial # 1477xx. It shipped 5/1911. Might have sat in the vault for months before shipping.
