Jesse are you haveing sticking cases in that 686-3??
When they arrive you can be first in line to recieve them..
I'll bet alot of 38 special has been shot through your L Frame.. A spent magnum brass case is the first step in getting that clean along with some serious scrubbing with a bronze brush & even some "Chore Bore" Copper wool wrapped around an old cleaning brush used with Hoppes #9 or whatever cleaner your useing.. WARNING Do not use ammonia based cleaners on "Nickeled" guns as the base coat beneath the Nickel is "Copper" & you don't want your Nickel flakeing off because of the solvent..

I need to work out a better way of keeping track of were they are & who has them..

Before, all I asked was that the user pay the S&H on it's next destination to the next forum member..
I found myself that mounting the cylinder in a padded vise & I used a Ryobi Cordless drill & you have to keep the hone moving In & Out & don't go bezerk trying to remove TOO MUCH Material, Just smooth the bores out & try an stay away from the ledge that the bullet rests against..
keeping the hones lubed & it'll create a "Slurry" which is removed metal & oil mixed with some bit of hone material.
I still think that a piece of wet/dry silica carbide sandpaper 600/1000/1500 works better right at the step because the hones balls are round & flat piece of sandpaper wrapped around a split shaft get right up to the step..
It would be good to have a "GO" "NO GO" gauge to test for a bulged or overhoned cylinder, I'm Gonna Contact Dave Manson as he is a forum member here as he makes these gauges for Brownells..

You Guys paid for them there for thier yours to use..
That's what I did before & it worked great for many a person who used them, Mostly 940 owners because that was the thread going at the time were I offered thier use..


I am very blessed to have a bunch of friends here at the S&W Forum who are honest & careing..
Pray for me as I've been unemployed for over two weeks now.
I need to think outside the box & find a job that is great were I don't mind going in every day..
I was a maintenance tech for the last 10 years & used to like my job but over time I became the fall guy who had to work days nights weekends & be on call 24/7/365 for FREE
I don't miss that job one bit!!

Gary, I believe in Karma as in what's goes around, comes around. Whoever has those hones will get theirs somehow, someday.

Like I said, just paying it forward. I'll need something someday and someone will come thru. Right now, I'm just glad I am in a position to help.

Hang in there on the unemployment. It'll work out.

Very sorry to hear about being unemployed. I hope you find something soon! I like that you will share your hones with the forum. They did something nice for you and you are returning the favor. I agree with the post made about what goes around comes around. I have been here for a bit and enjoy reading. I will not post my thought about who keep your hones. I need no reprimand, but you get the idea. I am glad that although there are some here who do not deserve being here there are also first class people who I am proud are on the same forum as I am.

When I received the hones from Gary, he gave me instructions similar to above. I was leery of overdoing it, and asked a machinist friend for his opinion. He advised using a hand-drill. I have a very good double pinion hand-drill, and a wooden-jawed luthiers vise (sometimes called a pattern makers vise), didn't even take the cylinder off my 940, just dropped open and into the vise jaws. Using the hand drill, spinning at a moderate hand speed, keeping it moving in and out, never settling on one spot, like Gary says, with the slurry, not too many times, then shifting to the finer hone, same thing. Then a thorough cleaning, and presto, problem solved. I didn't do it long enough to round over the machined step, I can still load single rounds just fine. I didn't bother with the dowel and paper. Result: before, after firing two cylinder full, I had to actually bang the ejector rod against a wooden range table top, hard, to get the empties out. Post-op, slick as a whistle. No change in my groups. So my advice is to use a light touch, with hand tools, and see if that does it. I kept my Dremel tool in the tool chest. If you don't have a double pinon hand drill, you should , check out

I feel the same. I especially like that after getting new hones that they will be loaned out to forum members just like the originals.

I think that shows what kind of person that Gary is especially with him asking for his hones back because other forum members would like to use them, not because HE needs them. And what the members of this forum are like by pulling together for one of their own.

I know if I was who kept them I would not be able to look in the mirror knowing that I had kept someone else property especially reading that Gary has been unemployed and I could probably afford new property better than him. Totally worthless.

I feel almost worthless in this situation as it is..

I think the main thing to note when useing these hones is to "GO EASY" You can't put the material your removing back & it needs to be done with "KID GLOVES"..
I used a variable speed cordless drill & never got the hones up to high speed I went easy..
They did make a big difference in my 940 & that's why after I did my first one & I offered to let anyone use them & they started there trip around the globe, around Christmas they made it back to me when I got my 2nd 940 which also had sticking cases & I honed that cylinder, In fact I haven't been to the range since then & that's terrible in itself but that may change this Saturday as my buddy just bought himself a 10" Ruger MKII & wants to go plinking & of course shoot any "New Handgun or Rifle that has been picked up since our last range outing..
I have a new to me 3913NL & the 2nd 940 that needs wringing out with variouse ammos, Plus a 10/22 Ruger & Nylon 66 that needs some range time too..

Thanks again to everyone who offered to make the hone replacement happen & if the person who has the originals wants to return them just email me to get the address no questions asked..

You are most welcome, my friend. One of the things I like about this forum, as has been noted is the quality and caliber of the members.

Needing a good job...sounds like this economy for certain. I feel for the people either needing a job or in an industry where they may soon need one.


To work in a gunstore... I think I would like it. I hope something great turns up for you soon.

It cost alot of dough to run one of these sites..
We need to start a collection for him or maybe sell unwanted stuff grips holsters etc to raise money for him so he doesn't have to foot the bill.. Just an Idea..

Hi Gary, I just sent a pm to Zilmo asking where to send $$$, also I read that you are a member of the other S & W forum and faced the same trouble my fiance who is a member of the other S & W forum and she had the same kind of trouble signing in like you did. Under the S & W forums front office there is a thread about trouble logging on since they had some problems with the site. You can find the instructions on how to re log on under the S & W forums front office section and there is a thread entitled logging in, it appears that you have to delete everything under the browser including the cookies. Read that and you should be OK. Hope this helps.


Follow those directions and you should be able to get back on.
