Plenty of 27 threads, how about one for model 28s

I'm seeing a ton of threads on the model 27's, how about one for the model 28. I found one in the LGS today for $450. This pinned and recessed 4" blue beauty is about 98% with only minor finish lose on the end of the barrel. They graciously set it aside for me, so tomorrow I will either put it on lay-a-way or trade a semi auto for it. One way or the other, it will be mine.

Will be taking my 28 HP to the range this weekend to test out various .357 rounds that I have accumulated over the last 3 months. Out of the 7 .357s I own, this one brings a grin to my face just thinking about.....forget it, I gone to the range!!!

I've posted this several places before, but I'm pretty proud of it. Got it about 4 months ago when a guy came into the LGS and traded it for a Taurus Judge. It was new in the box. Shipped Aug '70. Hope he's happy with his Judge. I know I am with my new HP.

Honestly, I have always preferred .44 Spl until I fired some hot .357 out of this bad boy. It has fast become my favorite S&W shooter.

I've had mine since Feb. I always sort of had the view that "N-frame is overkill for a .357". I bought mine as an adoption since an old, retired friend with no heirs interested in guns is looking to thin his herd. Now that I've had it awhile I can appreciate the big frame for the .357. It even tames the jump of hot 125-grainers.

I've run mine in IDPA a few times and Lord willing and creek don't rise I'll have it back out for next month's match.

Forgive the poor quality of this picture, but I HAD to get in on this show & tell. This is a picture of a S&W 28 that my father and I picked out at a gun store in 1981, when I was 13, as a backup gun for me on a black bear hunt we were about to take. For many many years afterwards, it lived in Dad's dresser drawer. Over a 30 year period, it probably had less than 100 rounds shot through it.

Dad passed away last February, and this fine old revolver was passed on to me. I decided to add Spegel grips, bought a nice Lobo IWB holster, and I now carry this fine shooter every day.

It's funny how, 30 years later, and having tried and carried many different handguns, this one is still my favorite and is very special to me.

Model 28-2 with Grashorn elk antler grips. I have a 6" 28-2 also, but the barrel has been sent to David Chicoine so he can cut it to 5", re-install the ramp front sight, and put a red insert in it. Can't wait to get it back. I had a 3rd 28-2 with 6" barrel, but sold it last week-end.

teesur, what are those grips, and who makes them? My gun currently has a set of Hogue rubber grips on it, but I want to put something more traditional on it, and those my friend are gorgeous.

The Model 28 is a Model 27 that was brought out by S&W to sell to the police departments and law enforrcement officers. S&W reduced the price by not checkering the top strap and not polishing the steel as much which resulted in lower costs on that model and a flat almost matt blue.

They are a great revolver and until about a year or so ago weren't very popular. Based on prices I've seen lately $450 is a steal for a 98% Model 28-2 with 4 inch barrel as the price has moved up a bunch on them in the past 18 months. I have two 4 inch and a 6 inch model 28 and they are great shooters.

I've shown this one before and obviously it was nickeled sometime in it's past but it is the gun that rekindled my interest in S&W revolvers. Shoots very well.
I got these targets when I was at the OGCA show a few weeks ago. They needed a refinish but were pretty cheap so I grabbed them. They were a light color with little grain showing so while refinishing I got the idea they might look better a darker color. After staining them I put 3 coats of Tru oil on them. I think they came out OK and look pretty good on the nickel gun.

I'm not very good at taking pics of nickel guns.

MD 28-2 with Stag stocks by the Executioner.

28-2 4" with Ahrends in cocobolo. This gun left S&W on July 13, 1972. It was shipped to Smith Brothers Hardware Company in Columbus, Ohio.

28-2 6" with Ahrends in cocobolo. This gun left S&W on September 1, 1978. It was shipped to Wischo KG, Erlangen, West Germany. There are no import marks of any kind on this gun.

Pre-model 28 Highway Patrolman 4", 5 screw, with factory grips. This gun left S&W on September 3, 1954. It was shipped to California Hardware Company in Los Angeles, California.

There's a 4" posted on my local Armslist by a LGS for $425. They call it fair condition but it looks to be in better shape than mine that I paid $400 for.

This shop is known for being a bit pricey so knowing that one is out there at such a good price point is just killing me.

It eats at me because I know I couldn't fit it and the 1911 I want to get this calendar year into the budget.

I got my only Model 28, this -2 four inch with old Herrett stocks, on my wedding anniversary in May. I took the Mrs. shopping at a cool old-time jewelry store and let her pick out several items. We then stopped at a couple of gun stores where I spied the 28-2 at a very good price. She said "I'll buy that for you for our anniversary!''. Like my wife and I, the gun shows honest wear and has a lot of character. Great shooter too.

I bought the gun wearing Pachmayr Presentation rubber. After the deal was done and the money had changed hands the guy threw in a set of take off grips he had no use for. Sweetened the deal up considerably...
