So we were having a friendly(?)game of poker the other night.Full table betting on their cards etc. At the end it just another player and me betting to the end(showdown) I believe its called. So by the way the other player is betting they have a good hand or is bluffing but how do you bluff for a couple dollars. Well my hand is really not very good but I have come this far so I threw my money in end of that story. The other player showed their hand and it beat me easy so i just flipped my cards over and threw them in the pile, saying you win at the same time. Well the other player said (insisted) I must show my cards. What say you. Thanks

I think technicaly it depends on who called who but if you knew he had you beat no way would I show my cards.

Interesting question, I'm gonna guess that you don't have to show your cards.

Let me get this straight... You called his bet and he opted to not raise? He showed his hand which beat what you had. You weren't called so the only time you are required to show your hand would be to prove you had him beat.

If you fold you don't show your cards.
If he calls you then you have to show your cards because he paid to see them.

If you had called his bet then he is "required" - according to Hoyle - to show his hand. If you accepted the fact that you were beaten then you are NOT "required" - again according to Hoyle - to show your hand. ONLY the Player wishing to Claim the Pot is Required to show his/her hand. Unless, you are playing according to some very strange "House Rules" which would be a very strange set of Rules indeed. You paid to see his cards, he didn't pay to see yours.

I love it.I knew I was right and the (old girl) was wrong. Shes a very insistent person and wants the game played her way or else. Anyway (according to Hoyle) under poker etiquette the following action are improper and grounds for warning., suspending or barring a violator. Quote (Telling anyone to turn a hand face up at the showdown)Thanks guys. I knew i could count on you guys for truth justice and the American way

next time she pulls that crap offer to sell her your cards for $20.00 each.

Next time that happens and the guy is giving you grief, lean back in your chair, tap the fingers on your right hand on the grips of your gun and say:

"why Ed Bailey, are we cross?"

A hand that is called must be shown. Local rules dictate a lot too. Some plavces say that any player can ask to see a called hand-others only active players can exercise this. I never show my hand unless called, or in the case of a bluff for stratigic reasons only. Remember first and foremost poker is a mind game-you are playing your opponent much more so than your cards. It also helps to know your odds.

I love playing with the 20 somethings-the ones who grew up thinking poker was always played on the internet or in nice casinos-not in dirty rooms with all the players armed against some idiot trying to rob the game-if any of them are still speaking to me at the end of the night-I haven't done my job.

I haven't cracked a Book of Hoyle in 25 years, but I think you guys better look again.
As I recall, all live hands must be shown if requested by any player in the showdown.
I know the winner has the right to see them.

I stand (or sit) corrected....

5. Any player who has been dealt in may request to see any hand that has been called, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that may be revoked if abused. If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead. If the winning player asks to see a losing player’s hand, both hands are live, and the best hand wins.

You don't have to show your cards. It's very simple. If the person shows their hand and you see they won (whether you are right or wrong) it's just like you folding, and either way you do NOT have to show your hands. Watch the poker tournament where they are playing professional and you will see players do that a lot.

We are not talking about the common practice- we are talking about the rule, and what must be done if someone pushes it. I played my share of poker long before Al invented the internet. Long ago and far away, I was actually a licensed poker dealer in a western state. I also ran a "credit" game on a book when I was in the army- pay at payday, and I bought a new car when I got out.

You are right- they seldom even care on TV, or in most games for that matter, what the losers had. Sometimes, though, one wants to know if the guy rides low pairs, bluffs, or is just stupid. One rarely sees the point pushed, but if it is, the rules rule. Check it out in Hoyle, not on TV.
Besides, I'll bet most of the big guys playing a Tournament are recording it, and can watch any hand they want to later, since they show the world what the hole cards are with the minicams.

As the Chief of Security in a casino I know a thing or two about this subject. While it rarely is an issue,(I can only recall three or four times in the last decade that I personally have been invoved in) the hand must be shown if requested.

If I'm in at the end and call, I will NOT let a called hand be mucked-I called as much to see the guys cards as anything else-if I win that's a bonus. Poker is a game of persons first, then cards.
