Mr. Jinks says my 66 is a Police gun. I've requested a letter to determine where it was sent. It was obviously never issued as it is pristine with a box, papers, and tools. I think it is a fitting place to mount my recently acquired John Hurst grips. John, along with Fuzzy Farrant and Guy Hogue at LAPD made custom grips for officers. Whomever had these made had a smaller hand than mine. But I think they are beautiful. Hurst was the US Champ Police shooter in 1959 and was on the Olympic team in 1960. Thanks to member calreb for the history. Enjoy

Nice model 66...
The bride and I cruised by the Academy last week
and stopped in for our yearly LEOSA qualification.
I qualified this year using my Colt Commander and
she used her Model 66ND as usual..1973 vintage.

The new Copper-chick range officer all of what appeared to
be 28 maybe 30 years old looked at it like it was a Flintlock.

LE agencies often buy a few too many general issue guns to cover themselves for new officers coming on as well as to have guns available for whatever might happen. These NIB guns get surplussed, along with used issue guns, when the latest and greatest new general issue bulk purchase arrives to fill the holsters. Some LE agencies have policies to allow officers to buy these "old" guns, often at a low price. Some officers want their old duty gun (or one like it) and some don't.

I had one of the early no dash 66's with the bright SS front and rear. Dang near impossible to get a decent sight picture in bright sunlight. Fix for the front sight was to simply apply a little paint (pick a color that works for your eyes and work conditions). For the rear I simply installed a complete blackened SS rear, of the proper blade height. To reverse simply re-install original sight that you saved then take solvent to remove paint on front sight.

Gorgeous custom grips by the way!

Love it!

I have an early no-dash 66 with Fuzzy's on it. Other than the stainless sights, it is a wonderful shooter.

Looking forward to seeing you and your Dad at the Symposium. Does your 66 letter as an LEO gun? My good friend kansasgunner and my memory tells me you guys have more than a few.

I had a 19-3 and a 66-2 at the range today. The Range Safety Officers always get an opportunity to shoot my wheel guns. For many, it's the first time. May have a few converts.

Nice 66,LPD256. The grips are something special, i like them a lot.
As minconrevo said the sights on the early 66 with the stainless sights were hard to see and in my case the sight gouged my forearm.
I modified it in the 70's, and to be honest, I did not save the stainless sight blade. Couldn't think of a reason at that time.
After all these years still works very well.

Mine was a later ND shipping in May of 1977 so it came with the black rear sight with no white outline.

Roy did say it was a cop gun, but I haven't lettered it yet, as there are more in front of it that need letters.

Dad and I will be there, look forward to seeing you guys too. And, Tim is right, between us, we could outfit a medium sized city with wheel guns ;)

I made the same change but quite by accident...the original SS sight blade was broken during a 'wrestling match' on the pavement with an individual who objected to going to jail. He went to jail and my Mod 66 went to revolver Doctor for rehab...
