Police Trade-In 640

Saw these pop up on slickguns and seemed like a decent deal for $470. Pulled the trigger on one, should be in the mail to my FFL shortly. I'll post some pictures once it gets here! Should take some of the snubby shooting burden off of my M19.

Should have named this differently, this is a 640-1. Didn't realize initially that the 640 was a 38spl only until the 640-1

I think that was a great purchase, and if I didn't already carry one every day I'd have one on order myself. While a 442 is enough lighter that I can carry it in a pocket, I find it absolutely no fun to shoot and so hate to practice with it. The 640 is enough heavier that it's tolerable (for me) to practice with, and the difference in weight isn't something I notice when it's in an OWB holster on a belt. I also think the extra length of ejector rod that comes with the slightly longer barrel of the -1 makes for more reliable extraction of 38 Special cases (which is all I shoot in these guns.) So welcome to the 640 club.

The 640 models are my all time favorite J Frame. I went a very long time before I ever saw one for sale in person. Bought it! A year or so later, I found another one. Bought it also. I normally carry .38 +P loads in them, which I feel are more than adequate for the task I have for them. I particularly like the Centennial Frames for EDC, and these SS frames with the slightly longer barrel in place work very well for me. I highly recommend them.

I can also tell you that in my part of the world, the price you gave is very reasonable. You don't see these revolvers often and I've never seen on listed for that little money. I sure wouldn't take that for mine! Congratulations. I will be very surprised if you don't become very fond of that one. Good luck with it!

Nice 640 -1. They are one of S&Ws best in my opinion. You'll enjoy it I'm sure.

Shoot the CCI Blazer .357 JHP 158gr loads for practice (or carry!) and the W-W .357 JHP 110gr loads for carry. Your steel frame gun will eat them up, beg for more, and you won't even know you've fired it.

Thanks for the response guys! I can't wait for it to get here. Hopefully I'll have it by next weekend and be able to enjoy it at the range. This will likely turn into my summer carry gun with some +P in it. I'll get pictures up ASAP when it arrives

The earlier 640-1s seem to be stamped "Smith & Wesson" on the left and ".357 Magnum" on the right barrel (as in GCF's photos above), and from what I have seen later runs used different stamped barrels, with "S & W .357 Magnum" on the left barrel. It would be interesting to know the SN prefixes on the two above to see if one was made much later than the other.

I hadn't noticed the difference, but you are obviously correct.

Got mine from the original owner last summer. Came w/ original Uncle Mike's boot grips, & no box. He indicated that he bought it new, shortly after the -1 / .357 version became available. Sometime in - or soon after 1995..., I think.

Confirmation anyone??

Forged internals, far as I can tell. Very smooth action, excellent DA timing, & satisfyingly accurate - at realistic SD range. Shoots both Speer 135 +P Gold Dot SB, & 158LSWC hand loads surprisingly well.

This revolver has pretty much replaced EVERYTHING else, for my "around town" EDC. Gets carried in in either a DiSantis pocket holster, or an Andrews Custom Leather tension hold Saddle Style (pancake) rig.
