Police Trade-in Shotguns

I found this in a local pawn shop recently for $400. It actually had an old Surefire forend light on it that I put on another 870. And a wood stock from an 870 express that I swapped for a synthetic. Barrel is a Carlson replacement (came with that muzzle device). And I swapped the scattergun +2 ext. for a lefty Wilson +2 ext.

This dates to 1988 or 89' best I could tell & is pre-Police marked (Magnum marked). It has that "466" & "M" number stamped on both sides of the receiver. Seems better built and with a smoother action than the newer 870's I've owned. My Depts. Shotgun was the 870, so I always have one around.

This is a copy of a USMC M870 Mk1 that I built up while in the Corps. I used it to teach a Combat Shotgun Course when stationed at Naval Station Long Beach. Sorry not a police gun. It is a combat shotgun designed by the Corps, it has rifle sights and a bayonet lug.

I got this Winchester 1300 earlier this year, a Alaska State Trooper trade-in. The stock was sticky. I found out there was a recall and sent it in for a re-coat in carbon fiber.

Thank you, Sir. The chair was found by my Daughter in an on-line yard sale. My Wife painted it free hand and put some of my old Squadrons on the arms. As you can see in the picture below she did a wall too.

I think the shotgun is nice too.

I got a police trade-in S&W pump with rifle sights about 4 years back for $200. Just because I didn't have a pump self-defense shotgun. I don't like shotguns for SD but my sister did and I traded it to her for my Speed Six back I'd loaned/given her before...a family thing. I'm pleased.

I have a Remington 870 with a Akron, Ohio property sticker/badge but no rack number, The stock varnish is pretty ugly, the action is like butter! I added a simple tube cap Sure Fire hanger and light. I paid $189 about 15 years ago.

I bought a Remington Wingmaster ex-cop gun about 25 years ago for $140. I also picked up an Express barrel on the cheap, so now I can also hunt with the shotgun, just have to use 2 3/4 inch shells.

When our agency was preparing to start replacing our old Rem 870P's, I made up the priority list for our assigned shotguns. (I had taken it upon myself to do all the periodic cleaning, maintenance and checks of all post shotguns, thus knew which ones were in need of replacement.) The older Rem 870P Wingmaster that was assigned to my patrol car was buttery smooth and was completely reliable. On the shotgun roster that I had made up , I had made a note that I wanted to put my name on "my" shotgun, for purchase, when it came time to turn it in. Unfortunately, I left on a hunting trip and while I was gone the Sergeant that took over the task ignored my note and just shipped "my" shotgun in. I never saw "my" Wingmaster again and I was not a happy Trooper.
The replacement shotguns we received were 870 Expresses and they were extremely tight/rough and I had to sit for hours while watching tv cycling the action on mine to get it loosened up to where it was usable. Unfortunately that turned out to be the least of it's issues as the rifled slug sights were horribly regulated and there was some type of issue in the extended magazine tube that caused rounds to bind up and stick in the mag. tube. I wrote up and sent that 870 Express in to our armorers multiple times and each time they sent it back saying they could not find anything wrong and it had to be my imagination.
Finally during a full post inspection the inspecting Staff Officer removed the shotgun from the rack, attempted to unload the shotgun for inspection and sure enough all the rounds stuck/bound up in the mag. tube. I finally was able to get that 870 Express replaced. (There was a SHORT discussion of writing me up for failing to report the problem, until I produced copies of all my prior repair requests and the return tags.)

Like the High Standard. We carried them upright in the front of the patrol car on right side of transmission hump in electric controlled locking rack that could released by a hidden button.

When we went to smaller cars (Chevy Malibu police package) around 1979 the top was too low to carry the new Rem. 870s that way. Went into the trunk. Those Malibus were great city police cars. 305 ci V8, great handling, quick acceleration but no top end speed. 105 mph was top speed floored.

Doing a re-bump.

Decided to go old school on this pre-police marked 870. I found this stock set in a local pawn shop. I had to cut-down the forend, as it was the longer kind, but it came out great.

When I first became a state instructor back in the 80's we had the 870 police. At that time we drove Fords and carried our shotguns in a pouch in the front seats. We mostly had LTD's and LTD II's. The newest cruisers were the awful Fairmonts.

The full size 870's would not fit in the pouch. We initially put the shotguns in the trunk. No one liked that so we changed all the Fairmont cars (shotguns were assigned by cruiser) to pistol grip stocks. My first range day at school we fired about 50 rounds. My hands were sore and I borrowed a full stock 870 for the remainder of the class. After the Fairmonts were traded we never purchased a smaller cruiser again. Our "tactical team" used S&W 3000's. They were a close copy of the 870.

The security company I retired from this year issued 870 police shotguns. They got rid of them about 3 years ago or so. Our company never had any problems to my knowledge. A competitor blew a hole in their armored vehicle just above the drivers head.

My only shotgun is a 870 tactical with composite stocks. I'd really love to find a high polish blue 870 police with wood stocks.
