I got a good deal on a 686 (no dash). Someone did a really nice job of polishing it and it sparkles. It is not nickle plated. It is stainless steel. Question: is there a way to get it back to the pre-polished look? Polished looks nice but I think the original looks is good, too. I am just curious about this, if I ever wanted to do it. Thanks in advance for replies.

Well, except for the fact that the original "factory" finish was not a matte bead blasted finish but rather a brushed "satin" finish done by buffing and generally, that needs to be done by an expert on a wheel and not as a touch-up job done with a Scotch-Brite pad or Wet or Dry paper.

You may not believe this, but the only way to get it to really look like a factory finish is to have the gun "passivated" after polishing.

I read a comment from a S&W representative about 10 years ago. He stated that it takes on average 15 years before a "polisher" learns how to properly apply the various finishes to the S&W firearms.
If you want it returned to the factory finish, send it to S&W. Otherwise, you won't be happy with the results.

leave it polished and enjoy,for me ,i think polished looks great.
