The 586 is set up to shoot the PPC service revolver match.

Simple for me. I prefer blue revolvers and like a fool I traded a beautiful 4" 586 for a 4" 28-2. The chap I traded with send me a card with an extra $ 100. in it a week after the swap. A real gentleman!!!
I have a couple of 28's now but have always regretted that deal.

I already have a 686, so the choice was easy. Yes, stainless is more practical, but I do like a blue on occasion.

22 years ago I just HAD to have a 686, and I found a real cream puff. I wouldn't let anybody do a 'trigger job' on it because it could only mess it up.

So my vote is obvious. I wouldn't throw a 586 away, but if it's my money I'll buy a 686.

I am biased as a 686-3 owner who displays the box proudly. I think they are both great, I am just surprised at the price of the 686. I prefer stainless over blued due to the lower maintenance requirement, but there is no doubt blued guns are prettier.

Seeing as the 586 has uglier grips, no box, and is more expensive, it would be hard for me to argue in favor of it. Ultimately choose what you fancy most, but to me this is an easy decision, the 686 hands down.

I'd take out a loan and buy both of them. The prices are ok, especially on the 686.
