I already have stainless, and all the pictures of nickled Smiths make me drool. So I voted nickle.

Stainless for me because it seems to be more forgiving when you get a little lazy with your cleaning. I never owned a nickel piece, maybe I am missing something.

Very simple...I have never liked nickle finishes. I don't believe they look nearly as nice as a blued gun and seem to me to be the least durable choice available. Certainly wouldn't want one on a "using" gun.

I voted nickel 19. It was the first handgun I ever fired. I was at the very impressionable and tender age of 15. I have one now that I will never sell. Almost 30 years later I still think it's a very cool gun! I have a 66 2 1/2", and it's very practical, but it's not the same.

Sir, nickel's just too gaudy for my taste.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I started with the stainless ones, then went blue, then nickle.

Today? I like 'em ALL . . . as long as they don't have the damned lock.

Stainless is great for a utility handgun. Blued is good all the way around if you are gonna take better care of it vs. what the stainless might endure.

Nickle? Heck, they shore is purdy!

I like 'em all . . . but voted for a nickle plated M19 vs. a 66. They just look great . . . a wonderful classic in every way!

I was just having this discussion...

First let me say I love blue guns, there's just something more menacing, more wicked, more manly about blue guns. Of course stainless is convenient and easier to care for. I don't say it's as maintenance free as some would believe, but it is WAY less bother and worry than a blue finish. In practicality/durability nickel falls somewhere between the two. It's more durable than bluing and yet much better looking than stainless. Nickel guns are truly amazing to look at. I don't know anyone that would say they weren't impressed by a nickel finished S&W.

For collecting I think Nickel is the way to go. I believe that today Nickel is way under-appreciated, and therefore undervalued. I (and the guys I was talking with) know nickel guns are more rare than either blue or stainless. Personally I think they are much, much more rare. Take the mod. 19 for instance, there are zillions of these around (well tens of thousands anyway) and I'll bet that not 10 in a hundred were shipped in Nickel. Perhaps as few as 5 in a hundred and certainly not more than 15! I'd also bet the percentage of nickel guns goes way down (and the rarity goes way up) after the corresponding stainless model was introduced. Simply put, Nickel guns were always rare, stainless made them more so. I strongly believe that nickel's rarity will only be increasingly appreciated in the future, and that values will show it.

The problem with nickel is that in bright sunlight the glare off the barrel is so bright that it makes it difficult to pick up the sights quickly.
