I’ve become a Colt enthusiast. I like the historical aspect, as well as the function and quality.

This trio will do whatever a pistol can be asked to do.

All 45 auto.

I appreciate the standard grip safety, small thumb safety, and GI style sights.

I would like it if Colt still used the original GI thumb safety, with the very small ledge.

What I like about Colts in particular is the very stiff and positive thumb safety. Too many other 1911 brands have thumb safeties that are much too easy to switch on and off.

I only have one but that may change soon. I got my eye on a Defender.

The Defender is a good 3'' gun IMO. I've own three different examples, and each one worked well from the box. Check extractor tension with a loaded round.

Occasionally, one of the Defenders would spit brass back a my forehead. But they all went bang when I wanted them to.

I can carry my Defender .45 in the front pocket with a pocket holster. That's a lot of firepower in a pocket.

@Les,

I do like that Commander! Are those original height GI sights hard to pick up for deliberate aimed fire? Of all the 1911s I have owned, I never had one with the original height sights.

Thanks, Ed

Ed,

You're right, the sights aren't as good to pick up as the more modern, higher, wider sights, but I like keeping the gun as original as I can..... the Gold Cup has better sights. I hate to say it, (especially in this Colt thread), but probably my Kimber "Ultra CDP II", has the best sights of my 1911 style guns...

Here's a couple of other classic Colts...which also have the small, but smooth drawing, sights:

I have two colts that I really like. One is a .380 pocket that laid in a pawn shop back room for "a number of years." According to the old gentleman who owned the pawn shop, the original owner bought it to commit suicide with. The guy was a friend of the owner and he bought the gun from the widow and kept it rather than putting it out for sale. I bought the little Colt when the shop keeper decided to sell his personal "keepers."

The other is a commercial 1911 that was owned by Texas DPS. It may date to the thirties but I know that it goes back to 1946-1947. DPS went to an inventory property card during that biennium. It was last issued to me. My staff bought the gun from the state and presented it to me upon my retirement. It could use more visible sights and the barrel has some pitting from corrosive primers, but it stays like it was issued. I bought a combat grade Kimber for routine shooting. The old gun has a great trigger and it is accurate despite the sights and pitting. My heirs can decide it's fate, unless I donate it to the DPS museum.

My Ponies got out!

I know...I know....I'm probably not banned for life, but getting close to it regards Prancing Pony Purists.

You guys have posted some real beauties in the Colt line-ups and yea.....I still get Sellers remorse every now and then but I can't have it all and still stay happily married so most are gone, the only ones left are the Woodsman and the Peacemaker and they are listed elsewhere.

What Happened??? A couple of old (very old) gentlemen, one named Smith and the other named Wesson happened by one day long ago....peeked in my Safe, made a sad face, and proceeded to show me some of the finest revolvers ever made, told me about some forum on the Internet where I would find answers to any question I had about their products and accessories and finally in parting...the finale statement "boy...dump that Python, get 2 of ours you won't look back"

Below 5 (max pic upload) gone, follow up post all gone but 2.

Still miss em every day!

My sister has my Colt Cobra, now get this all she had to protect herself was a S&W model 29 so she needed a gun.
I really need to get that gun back.
Seeing how it became more of a nightstand gun than a carry gun I put on some larger grips to make it more shooter friendly.
