Possible 64-3 purchase...I have a question.

I have had phone contact with a gunsmith that is selling someone else's 64-3 with a 3 inch heavy barrel and a round butt.

I have NOT laid eyes on this gun. The guy tells me that it is in "LNIB" conditon with box, papers and cleaning brush. The owner also left a speed-loader in the box.

All pics of the 64-3 models that I have found on the net show a pinned barrel. This guy says his gun doesn't have a pinned barrel.

My question is this: Is it possible that some of the Model 64-3 guns had a pinned barrel and some didn't?

Thanks

Arkhog,I believe the pinned barrel went away with the dash 3 model. I have a dash 3,and it does not have the pin.

I just got a -3 model 3" RB that was supposedly a police dept turn in. Barrel is not pinned. Love it! I would say get it NOW.

The pin must have gone away during the -3 production run. If you use a search engine and search for the Smith and Wesson Model 64-3 you will get pics of guns with pinned barrels.

If yours, and the one I am considering, both are missing the pin then a mid-production run change is the only real answer, I think.

Thanks for the reply.

The asking price is way high. In fact, it is so high that I would be embarrassed to post. I do like the idea of a vintage Smith in LNIB condition though.

What ammo does yours like?
