I currently live in Cincinnati, I'm becoming suspicious that I may be at risk of an upcoming RIF. So I'm making contingency plans, and I've been thinking about relocating to Indiana for the following reasons:

- I have friends there.
- My family is in the Milwaukee area. I don't really want to move to Wisconsin, but Indiana, maybe the northern half of the state, would be an easier drive to visit than Cincinnati.

Is this a good move? Where are the shooting ranges?

Thanks.

I am an x-northern Indiana Hoosier and moved to Southern Kentucky 28 years ago and never want to go back north again.

Reduction in force. I didn't know either but google makes us all smarter. :D

Thanks.

I had no idea because when I ran RIF in google I got;

Indiana is better than IL

I like Midwesterners. However, generally folks are nice everywhere. But the winters are wicked! I was happy to go back south and get to the occasional ice storm. As you are in Ohio it may not be such a shock for you but the "Lake Effect" snow can be a laugh a minute..

Have you researched the job market for what ever it is you do?

Check the Indiana DNR site for location of ranges on state land. There are local consevation clubs that have ranges, though some shoot trap only. Our local club has ranges for trap, cowboy, rifle, archery, and a river to throw rocks into.

Gun Freindly ! lots of gun shows up here in northern Indiana(i live in norteast Indiana) ! Several local-private and puplic shooting ranges ! i have 3 ranges to shoot trap and or shotgun sports less than an hr drive from me and 2 of them i can shoot pistols or rifles!

If you move to N.W. Indiana you will love working at Walmart. "If" you can find an opening there. There are virtually no jobs here. Every morning 20,000 people from around here get on the X Ways and drive 70 miles to their jobs N.W. of Chicago. I used to have to drive to Dayton, Oh. a lot and there's a lot of nice looking country around there. You might want to look up Indiana Gun Owners, join, and ask what's up and where.

That doesn't sound too good... I expected that being near Chicago, there would be all kinds of start-ups right on the Indiana side of the border.

I lived in Indianapolis for about 5 years, and we liked it. Nice people, lots to do in town, and don't have to go far to get out of town. Southern Indiana is very nice, rural and beautiful countryside. NW Indiana looked pretty grim (rust belt-grim...) every time I drove through on my way to Chicago.

I also found Indiana to be gun friendly. Housing costs, and taxes were pretty reasonable. Overall, I liked my time there. Winters were a bit cold, but it was not Alaska!

Good luck with your decision/move.

I've just started some searching. I do software engineering, and Indianapolis has jobs posted.

Right now I'm at the typical bureaucratic big company. It has a way of sucking the fun out of the job, so I'm looking for something small. Small teams that are more interested in getting the job done instead of following rules.

It seems most engineering work has been consolidated in a handful of overcrowded cities on the left and right coasts, where I don't want to live. Or Chicago, which is to be avoided for obvious reasons.

I'm also considering switching careers, trying something new. I haven't figured out what that would be yet. I would rather find a place where I would like to live, and find a career that accommodates the location. Match the career to my chosen location, rather than letting my job dictate where I can live.

About 10-15 years ago people from Illinois started moving just south of me in droves. They didn't want exististig housing. They wanted new, I guess figuring taxes and cost of a larger home here was probably 2/3rds of what it would cost in Illinois. Taxes in this county (Lake) skyrocketed to cover infrastructure costs. A lot of new home owners are now up to their ears in debt. Indiana is trying to lure business from Illinois, since Illinois has in the recent past increased business taxes. They've had some success but it's a slow process. What type of work are you interested in?

I'm a software engineer, so my first choice would be a software job. But I would prefer a smaller startup-type over a big bureaucratic company - been there already. I'm also considering going back to school and learning a different career, if that helps me find a job someplace where I WANT to live, instead of HAVE to live.

With your background, you work in an area of endeavor I'm not familiar with. I used to be in point of sale support and did "lite IT" work. I retired last year because I can't stand the commute anymore. A guy like you might find a job here, but I don't see a lot of new investment here. It's big news if the Jiffy Lube is hiring.

I think Indiana is in the top 5 gun friendly states. Great laws, supportive of open or concealed carry, easy to get what you want and not have to jump through 100 hoops, not super taxed, only thing you need a permit for is carrying a handgun (and of course any classIII), and last I checked, we were the only state to offer a lifetime permit ($125).
For a software engineer/techy type job, stay toward the bigger cities. Indianapolis, Ft Wayne, etc. Indianapolis has some great companies for that line of work. Live outside of them(cities), then drive in, though. Bigger cities=bigger crime, like anywhere. Rural Indiana is fantastic, though. There are gun clubs and private ranges all over, but I really like and recommend Winamac's public ranges (in the middle of the northern section). Besides it being so goshdanggrumble cold in the winter, Indiana is not a bad choice. :)

If I had no family ties and could live wherever I wanted, I'd probably still stick around the Ohio River valley area of north Louisville. Chattanooga/north Georgia would be second but I'm kinda like an old sooner dog and believe I could get along most anyplace south of Indianapolis that you could get good groceries.

If you like gunshows this is the place to be. Some of the prime winter week-ends there have been as many as 4 shows within a 100 mile ring. :)
