Gino Marchetti

Gino Marchetti about to tackle NY Giants' fullback Mel Triplett NFL Championship Game, Yankee Stadium, 1958-

attachment.php

Growing up in Baltimore, I was fortunate to see this big guy (6'4", ~ 245 lbs) guy live and in person, both on the football field and around town, as Dad and I went to Colts games at now demolished Memorial Stadium, and Marchetti opened his first burger joint in 1959 (Gino's Hamburgers) of a subsequent 313 store franchise right across the street from my high school, where we'd be thrilled to see him and have small talk with him when he'd be there in the off season.
He was an Army machine gunner in WW2, fighting in the Bulge, then into Germany until war's end. He went to college on the GI Bill, and didn't play his first NFL game until age 26, a late start by today's standards.

On the field, Marchetti was a force of nature, exemplified by former opponents' comments:

Sid Gillman, the Los Angeles Rams head coach, called Marchetti "(T)he greatest player in football. It's a waste of time to run around this guy's end. It's a lost play. You don't bother to try it."

Hall of Fame offensive tackle, Forrest Gregg, said Marchetti was the greatest player he ever played against. Gregg said in an interview: "You ask who was the best ... just my opinion, Marchetti was the best all-around player I ever played against. Great pass rusher. Great against the run. And he never let you rest."

Quarterback sacks were not kept as an official statistic during Marchetti's playing years, but Baltimore Colts unofficial team records had him with 43 sacks in one single 12-game season during his prime, well past the current NFL season record. Marchetti himself recalled nine sacks in a single game. Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne said "being sacked by Marchetti was like running into a tree trunk in the dark."

What's with all the baseball pictures ? OP clearly stated SPORTS PICTURES. Baseball is a game. Not a sport. Fat guys play while eating sunflower seeds. You could go deep into extra innings and never break a sweat. Just saying.

Well , since eb07 accused me of only being a troll. Here is my contribution. Greatest QB of all time threw a TD pass to himself. Mahomes, Brady and Rodgers never did that.

Ouch, that hurts……… I don't hate baseball I was just stating facts. My wife's dad was invited to Baltimore Orioles training camp in the late 50s. My son and stepson played baseball. It's a joke I like to make.

I kid. I kid. :D

Carlton Fisk waving his walk off game 6 1975 world series home run fair. They would go on to lose game 7 and keep the curse alive. Anyone who says base ball is just a game has never sat in the roof seats of Fenway Park for a twilight game in August with a cold beer and a sandwich from the Sausage King.
