The PG just stated that they are indeed cutting Saturday mail service beginning in August. Then goes on to state there would be no lay offs. How can this be? Any company that cuts almost 17% of service would surely have to cut back. Where are all the extra people going?

My guess is they'll reduce the workforce through attrition. As people retire and quit they won't be replaced. On the other hand, if we read of the Post Office hiring after August somebody needs to ask some questions.

I don't mind this, except when there's a Monday or Friday holiday. Then, when you expected to get something on Friday, you have to wait until Tuesday.
That was one of my concerns also. Can you imagine the amount of mail in your box on a Tuesday after a holiday?
From what I understand, it is only First Class letter mail delivery that is being eliminated on Saturdays. There will still be package (and Priority mail, etc.) delivery, thus the mailman will still be out on the job working on Saturdays.

They were forced by congress to fund their own 75 year retirement in 10 years!! If not for that, they would have had a 1 and 1/2 BILLION dollar surplus this year! I think the PMG is doing this 5 day deal to push back on this onerous retirement scheme. They are making wide spread reductions in their work force by using fear, and offering early retirement pay offs. There is a lot to this issue that is beyond what the gov wants seen. Remember, no tax money is consumed by the po. And in my view, sending a letter across the country for .46 in 2-3 days is a good deal.

Where I grew up and it is still the same out there.. We got mail MWF.
A ranch lady went to the PO and drove a 65 mile route delivering the mail, pickup what was in the mail box and returning it to the PO.
Got along just fine without Sats.

Seriously though. We are spoiled. $.45 (or whatever it is now) to mail a letter is dirt cheap if you look at other countries. What they need to do is bump the rate on bulk mail. More $$$ for the PO, less tonnage for the carriers, probably less **** for us to sift through. Everybody wins.
Never happen though, just as the PO will never go away completely. Elected critters use bulk mail for their mailers every couple, four years...

I've got no problem if they just deliver once a week. That's about how often I check it anyways......
I wouldn't bother me if they only delivered MWF, or some other modified schedule. All I routinely get in the mail box is junk mail anyway. All our bills are sent electronically, and either drafted from our checking account or charged to a credit card. On occasion, I do sell something and get a money order...but that isn't really very often. My wife sells a lot on eBay, but that is all PayPal (which I need to ask her where that money goes...when she buys something, I pay for it; when she sells something, I don't get the money. 
)

Modern technology such as email, social media, and the text message has hurt the Post Office. Why pay for the paper, ink, antelope, and stamp and then wait for your message to be delivered when you can get the same message sent cheaper and within seconds. The loss of mail one day a week does not bother me.

From what I heard eliminating Saturday will save $2B out of an annual $60B budget - does that mean if they also eliminated Mon through Fri they would only save an additional $10B and still lose $48B per year even though they aren't delivering anything?

My question is why the post office is the only government service expected to make a profit? HUD does not...it only consumes money, DOD never made a profit...The State Department just spends tax dollars. At least the post Office charges a fee for their service. Also consider the privacy you get, it is illegal to open anyone's mail...you cannot say that about electronic mail all the company's read your mail. the founders thought the post to be so important that they included it in the constitution.

I agree! I don't have an urgent need to go through all the AARP recruitment papers or all the other junk fliers that make up most of the mail we get.

This I don't really get. Will all the mailmen be delivering packages to their routes, or will one mailman cover multiple routes for packages on Saturday?
And if I have regular mail and a package on Saturday will they only deliver my package? Seems... odd.

I figure there are a few mail carriers on this forum and while I feel for your plight the simple fact is that using a conservative estimate 80% of my mail is unsolicited junk that goes directly to the recycle bin. It appears (to me anyway) that the post office gives sweetheart rates to junk mailers in order to keep their rosters up. Delivery could be cut to 3 days a week and the post office could shrink 50%.
It isn't a good sign that the government uses FEDEX and UPS 98% of the time over the Post Office either. As reported in the Washington Herald on line 1/28/2013:

they will most likely have a handfull of carriers running parcels to mutiple routes........only priority,express,meds, and first class,the important stuff......books,3rd,4th class, etc will wait til mon.

We used to have uniformed mailmen for life when I was a boy. Now we have "people" that I sometimes think are in the neighborhood raking leaves or robbing houses and it's a different one every other day. Forget about putting it in the mailbox, some of them just throw it on the floor of the porch.

#1 Fedx & Ups don't serve about 25% of the country - think rural(not worth it)
#2 USPS now does "last mile delivery" on packages for both so they can't be completely without merit

It's common to see UPS making deliveries to our Post Office. When I asked about
this a few years ago I was told that they rely on the USPS, for certain
parts of our area, to get the package to it's final destination.

Well if they're going to save billions of dollars and they're not going to get rid of any of the people where is the saving coming from? I can't see where being closed for one day will save that much but maybe I am just overlooking the obvious or something.
By the way, I can't remember the last time I wrote a letter, must have been when I was in the Army, and I can't remember the last time was that I got a letter either. Maybe a birthday card or something but not a letter.

My complaint is they are raising prices and cutting service. They need to cut some of their ineffective work force instead. Where I live we have two adjoining towns, you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. One of these towns has a population of about 1000, the other has a population of about 2,500, yet we have two fully staffed PO less than two miles apart. I have a son in law who is basically a letter sorter in a PO. Thanks to a union, he makes a better wage and has as good or better benefits as a senior NCO in the military. Everytime you turn around the PO is taking some little known holiday off, a holiday that normal working stiffs have to work on. No, the PO is like most government or quasi-government agenccies, poorly run and ineffecient.
