I would certainly agree with Lee's assessment regarding value. I would pay more than that for a mint example in the box with no reservations.

Here are two of mine that I like very much.

.357 Magnum, 5" Pre Model 27. 5 Screw. Shipped August 1950.

What would be a price for a 5-screw, pre 27 with 5" barrel, original magna grips, S&W letter, but no box?

hoser,
Depends on condition, but for an excellent example it can be $1200 to $1600, IMO.
Actually I like the 4-inch (late 27-2) better for carry and use. In a holster it doesn't hit the car seat, but there is something special about the pre-27s

I wouldn't mind a Model-numbered 4-screw, but Model-numbered S&Ws are not C&R and I HATE transfers.

That fifty year mark keeps clicking up every year! So first year M27's would still be C&R. You would just have to verify age on the serial number list.

I love the time period we are getting into. Once we get all the way up to 1965 or so, I'll be able to buy all my favorite old Smiths C&R!

Hi John,
Just curious: Why do you prefer the 27-2 over the 5-screw pre-27's? Do you feel they're better put together or where you only referring to the barrel length?
