Hello All!

I am on the verge of placing an order for bullets, but I am finding difficulty in locating reloading data for my preferred powders: 231 and Bullseye.

I am looking to order 124gr 9mm JHP (profile similar to the Hornady HAP bullet). I want to use either WW231 or Bullseye. The Hornady manual that I have doesn't have listings for these powders. The Hodgdon online manual lists an extremely anemic load for WW231. Honestly, I can't put my hands on my Sierra manual.

I have the data for the 115gr JHP bullet with my preferred powders, but I would like to stick with the 124gr JHP bullet since I am casting 124/125gr bullets and would like to stay within that bullet weight family.

If you can help out, could you please identify your source and the recommended minimum/maximum charge for Bullseye and WW231 with a 124gr bullet?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't load for 9mm, but in general I've found that if there isn't a lot of loading data for the powder/bullet weight combination that I'm looking to load, that usually indicates that powder not being a good choice for the load. I'd look for a different powder.

Best regards,

I do not understand you question?? You want data for a 124 gr JHP bullets?? But then you say something about "casting"? Regardless you can use FMJ data for cast or plated bullets.
Do some research

Both Hodgdon and Alliant have online data for that weight bullet

The amount of data for 124 gr 9mm is overwhelming??

How about the Speer online data?

I would guess there's lots of data available. I'd start with a new Lyman book.

Nothing wrong with the Hodgdon load for the 124-5gr that is on the internet for the Sierra bullet.

You might try it before you bad mouth it.

I have been reloading for my 3, 9mm pistols with Bullseye and W231, with 124 gr JHPs. I only have my Lyman 49th and an older Speer 13th on my desk in the house, and Bullseye is listed in both. I have a Hornady 7th manual and those powders aren't listed for their 124 gr bullets but both for 115. Hint; find a load in your manuals before you purchase any components...

The loads listed on line for the HAP bullet do seem low, but FMJ bullet load shows a bit over 1,000 fps, which ain't anemic for a 9mm...

You can use any data for 124gr fmj for a jhp, the oal will vary though. You should be working data up anyway, so dont over think it. Manuals are guides not bibles. Start at midrange data & work it up or down. Though I have no idea why you want to spend the money for expensive jhp to punch paper at fast powder burn speeds??

There's so much load data for 124/5 bullets in 9mm with W231 or Bullseye that I always have a hard time determining which reference material to use...

Sources of loading data:

1. Powder manufacturers' data
2. Bullet manufacturers' data
3. Third party info such as Lyman's manuals
4. Internet websites that specialize in reloading

I rely primarily on (1) but I have used Lyman's data. Use (4) with caution.

Win 231 and HP-38

Are exactly the same powder. Hodgdon says that they make both because brand loyalties in the reloading world die very hard. Put a load in on their website with both powders and you will get the exact same result.

I appreciate the constructive comments and load data. As many of you may agree, with respect to ammo and components, we have dark days ahead of us. We have no clue what will be available to us in the days ahead, nor at what price.

I have an opportunity to get either 115gr or 124gr JHP bullets at what I feel is a fair price, so I want to jump on it now as opposed to sometime down the road. I am asking about loads using either WW231 or Bullseye, because I have a fair supply of both, along with some Unique which I would like to reserve for my mid-range cast loads.

As you are well aware, powder and primers are becoming very scarce at skyrocketing prices, when they can be found. In the meantime, I am looking to use what I have.

Again. What is your question? I and others gave you sources for load data. What is the issue?
Its like asking for loads for a 38 special??

Why as a reloader you need more powder options. Your fav may be offline for months, a year or more. There are at least 12 suitable powders for every handgun caliber, regardless of bullet choice. The caveat, you may not have vetted data & have to extrapolate & build your own. Yes it is not for the inexperienced but a good plan to work towards.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, and their regular manual are indispensable. Lots of onfo on your two powders all through the handgun sections of both manuals.
Sierra’s manual is a good one for jacketed bullets.

Looking at the Hodgdon reloading data and the loads for the HAP bullet with W231 are lower than other bullets. Are they lower due to the bullet design/construction? Roughly a 200+ fps difference and 4800 CUP difference in pressure. Most bullets of a specific design are at least close in pressures/velocity, why is the HAP bullet loaded so light?

Gentlemen,

My question was: what are loading manual minimum and maximum loads using the 124gr JHP bullets in 9mm Luger, using Bullseye and WW231.

I have the current Hornady manual in hand, and the recent Sierra manual is in storage since becoming disabled and inaccessible at the moment. I have accessed both Nosler and Hodgdon sources online. I had mentioned cast bullets, because I had wanted to stay within the same projectile weight family as what I cast for. Unfortunately, data for the 124gr JHP and my two preferred powders was rather lean, with the sources that I have at hand.

I have been reloading for almost 45 years, but at the time I had my accident and became disabled, I had a severe concussion that stole many memories. While I am new to reloading the 9mm Luger, I am foggy on extrapolating data from one cartridge/bullet/powder combination, I wanted to be safe with some guidelines. As much as I would love to buy more reloading manuals, I don't have that much free cash or mobility in a lockdown state, hence I have asked what I felt was a straight forward simple question. Obviously, it was neither simple nor straightforward. Fortunately, there were some members here that understood what I was asking and provided the information I sought. For that, I am grateful.
