After my BIL passed, I inherited his reloading equipment. One of the pieces of equipment is parts of an RCBS 5-0-5 scale. I have a base, a gold pan, a wire I assume the pan sits on and about 3/4 of a beam. I would like to know what it would take to complete the scale. I called Ohaus and they do not support this product (no parts). Is it work trying to complete the scale or should I sell it to someone who might need the parts. Thank you for your help.

Did you contact RCBS for a manual? You might also find one on line. That should have a list of parts. You can also probably find parts on EBAY.

If the 5-0-5 has been marketed by RCBS in recent years, there is a good chance they will have what you need. Call the 800 number.
Ohas made the 5-0-5, 5-10-5, and the 10-10-5 scales for Lyman and RCBS. All are similar enough to have a similar value on the used market. There is a used one for sale for $90 for over 6 months in Westerville, Ohio at Aumillers. (I would bet $75 would get it out the door.)

Two gun stores I like to visit sell used reloading tools that I presume they take in as part of estates. They price excellent condition RCBS and Lyman beam scales in faded or worn boxes $25 to $50. A scale with a piece of sheet metal that you move from notch to notch on the beam for fine weight is worth less than one with a threaded barrel that you rotate to move its position. If memory serves the 5-0-5 is the former. For the $75 mentioned above most buyers of used scales would would be looking at an electric scale.
Too true! But a good beam scale has been reliable for years, with or without the power on.
I have 3 beam scales and 2 digital and trust the better 2 beams (5-0-5 and Hornady magnetic dampened, both from the 80's) far more than I trust the digitals.
You can buy a small digital scale that will weigh in grains, grams, pennyweight, & carats for less than $20 at head shops, add a AA battery any you are in whatever business you choose!

Confused. What do you mean you have 3/4 of a beam?
Broken it probably isn't worth repairing. Much easier and more reliable to buy a new scale. Unfortunately they are made in China now.

I did not know they were available so inexpensively. I've never even considered buying an electric scale. They are no more attractive to me than electric flint lock ignition. Despite that I know reloaders who trickle hard to meter powders onto an electric scale and I can see the logic of doing it that way. Isn't there an electric gizmo that does that automatically? It's probably not $20. My Belding & Mull powder measure meters large flake and long stick powders better than any other measure that I've tried. Owning a Belding & Mull eliminates what little attraction electric scales have. However, the more relevant question is what will a new reloader who does not already have multiple scales pay.

I have considered digital scales, always passed them up in favor of my old, trusty, reliable Lyman 1000 scale. No electricity required, no batteries to replace, insanely simple to maintain.

RCBS 5-0-5 is worth keeping ...one of the best scales ever made .
Call RCBS and keep eye out on E-Bay ... incomplete ones show up for sale . First you need to know what parts are missing .
Do a search on " RCBS 5-0-5 Instruction Manual" this should get you the instructions and parts list .
I believe I found instructions at RCBS site .

FWIW, a new Ohaus 505 sells on Amazon for $69.95. Made in China, but it works. You may be able to find a used one to scavenge parts from on the bay.

I have been using an RCBS 1010 that I bought used over 35 years ago. I trust it. I do have one of the small cheap electronic scales only because Midway was having a sale on them so I tried it. It works, but it turns itself off inf not used for about 30 seconds. Then you have to turn it on, then reset the Tare, then weigh another round. Not user friendly, and I'm not sure I trust it. I'll take a beam scale any day.
