I am currently trying to find a nice 25-2 to use as a competition gun in ICORE and USPSA revolver class. I have run across a Pre 25 that looks pretty good to me but I am a total newbie to revolvers. Are there any downsides to the Pre 25? What ever gun I end up with will see a lot of usage and I hope to make a choice that will serve me long term.

And.... Hello to all. My first posting. :)

Sir, action shooting can be hard on guns, and I wouldn't subject a collectors' item to that kind of use. Pre-25s are very much collectors' items, and so (to a lesser extent) are 25-2s. You'd probably be better off to get a new 625JM or the like.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I agree with the above. The keepers of safe queens are going to have a fit at the idea of shooting a pre-25 enough to compete, basically wearing out the gun in a few seasons.

Also, as already stated one of the newer 625s with the full lug barrel would probably be better suited to competition than even a 25-2. I say that with some authority as I competed in IDPA for several years with both a custom 25-2 (cut down to 5" and round butted) and a 5" 625. I liked the 25-2 better for looks but the 625 was a better competition gun.

As always, YMMV!

Might I add that the 625 could be sent back to S&W for parts and service work, while the older models are no longer supported? I would think that might be a deciding factor in a gun you plan to use hard.

You might buy one of those you mentioned just for a "walk in the park" now and then, meaning a trip to the range for just respect and admiration........
or just to admire.
