What items would be in my 1953 3 1/2" pre-27 box? It has the following:

A 9 row black SAT (screwdriver).
A long cotton mop with brass end.
A copper chamber brush brass end.
A black cleaning rod 7 1/2" total end to end.
No documents of any kind (I would like to find those).
NOX-RUST vapor paper, and tissue to wrap the above items.

Thanks, Bob

Warranty card. Owners manual is printed on the inside of the box in English and Spanish. Possibly this. It was in the box of my 6" (shipped Feb 54) but I don't know if it was in there from the factory. This card is dated 6-53.

Did S&W include pamphlets for "How to Shoot your S&W Revolver", holsters, and other accessories when they packed up the box? I seem to remember some holster pamphlets with some early revolvers, as well as some How to Shoot papers.

These items go back to about 1947 and may have been included with yours:

It may have also included the green "guarantee" card and the "caution" insert.

Jim:

Those photos and paperwork are for a pre-war gun from the 1930s.:)

Bob:

The post war 27's came with the following:

Usually the rod was an aluminum rod. Additional pre-27 paperwork includes the post war "Helpful Hints" and a warranty card, which you can see in the above post war photos, in addition, and from what I can tell, the tools were wrapped in a tan tissue paper.

I would think the most important item is missing form your list:
THE GUN!!! Preferably a 1953 5 screw pre -27 with a 3 1/2" barrel with the same serial number as the one on the box. This one item alone will increase the value of your box and accessories a bunch

Show a pic of the cleaning rod.
I had a 6" Pre-27 from the early 50s that was absolutely NIB with all papers and accessories. The rod was the typical S&W looped rod, but it was blue steel. I have seen a couple of others. I believe S&W bought or made at least one small batch in the early 50s, perhaps just to get by when they were out of the aluminum.
WW II guns (Victory Models and BSRs) were NOT shipped with blue rods. The WW II rods were copper washed and did not have threads. They were slotted for the patch.
If you are showing everything you have with the gun, you are missing threes items-
1- Helpful Hints
2- Warranty Card
3- Brown tissue that the tools were wrapped in to keep them off the gun.

Here's another blued steel cleaning rod (4th from the right). It was in an old pistol rug I bought and also included a knurled SAT.

Cleaning rod

I checked the cleaning rod it is blued steel like the one in the above photo from s&wchad, also there is the brown tissue paper that Lee mentioned as well, a little torn but there.
The gun appears new, test fired only I believe.

I too have a blued looped/threaded rod in my stuff. I do not recall where it came from but I always believed (erroneously it appears:rolleyes:) that it preceded the aluminum rods early post WWII. Good to know that it shipped as an accessory with some of the 1950's guns.

I learn new stuff here every day.

Thanks for sharing,

While we are talking about early 50s Pre-27s----

NOTE that your older Jan/1950 gun has a straight-sided "M&P" type hammer spur. That was only seen on 3-1/2" Pre-27s shipped in 1950. All other barrel lengths and later 3-1/2s had the semi target spur like the gun on top.

Another difference between them

Look at the front sight on the early one, a flat not as tall as the 1953.

Lee you looked at this Jan/1950 In Tulsa a few years back and it is on the pre-27 early list.
