Pre 27 date of manufacture ?

Pre 27 with 5" barrel date of manufacture please. The serial number is

S 187971

Welcome! It appears to be a 1958 gun and "should" be model stamped, but never say always with S & W. Is it a 5- or 4-screw frame?

It is a 4-screw and it is model stamped. I hope this does not sound stupid however, because it is model stamped is it still a pre-model 27?

Cloest SN on my list is S1864xx. It shipped in 4/59

If it says mod 27, then it is not a pre model. By definition a pre model is not marked.

Being stamped MOD 27 as a 4-screw frame and shipping in 1959 all fit. These were produced for about 3 years and are sought after by collectors due to their scarcity.

I believe the usual assumption is that N-frame model numbering began in the high S183000 range. So this one should definitely have the model number stamping.

Thanks all for the help. I decided not to purchase the gun due to condition and price however, I have others to check out.
