I was lucky enough to find a 5 screw pre-29 with the original cokes at a gun show this past weekend.
s/n is S 1742xx. can someone please look up the dob for me?

That looks to be a very high number for a 5 screw. Pete

44 Magnums with a 5-screw frame in this serial number range were generally shipped in mid-1957. Apparently, S&W found some 5-screw frames and used them to make 44 Magnums. These high numbered 5-screw revolvers are found in the range of S171000 to S175000.

S150,000 – S175,999……Late 1956 – Early 1957. That's manufacture, not shipping.

By late and early, I think the meaning is last half and first half of the year, so, mid-56 to mid-57.

They also used some of the high serial number five screw frames for pre-27's. I have one with a serial number of 1730XX with a five inch barrel.

My 4 screw Pre-29, #S1727** was shipped June '57. Which could mean absolutely nothing as far as when yours shipped. Lee
