Pre 29

Photo's of my pre 29. I posted a thread about a week ago asking for advice on the pre 29; 29, 29-1, or 29-2. Thanks, I had an opportunity to purchase the pre 29 and I jumped on it.

S154xxx, 5 screw, matching grips, no refinishing, all original.

Very nice looking gun, Just as a point of reference how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking? I have one just like it I bought two years ago for 1350. Did it come with all the tools?

You sure got a good one, especially one in the Old presentation case. Will you advise whether the Serial Number is written on the box bottom or not? They were shipped both ways, not sure which was first but both are valuable accessories with your Pre. Model 29. Nice find Sir!

Hopefully Jack doesn't mind me jumping in. One of the things I always loved doing as a collector was helping other up and coming ones.

Many of us started early and learned from the old guys eating bad hot dogs at gun shows. Long before the internet and all the other outlets we have today.

I met Jack with another transaction that was not on this forum. He's a straight up nice guy. Who has decided to jump head first into our pond of collecting. When he told me his wish list I knew I had seen one of them in a local shop.

It's a small local shop that mainly deals in black rifles and modern guns. When I took a closer look at the gun I then found out it was a 5 screw Pre-29. Gave Jack a call and we went from there. Not to shoot Jack on the photos but that gun is beautiful. The grips are something to behold. I also edged him on by telling him if he didn't buy it I was.

The case has a very light serial number on bottom which matches the gun. All serial numbers match with no rework marks, etc. The timing and lock up are probably the best I have ever felt in a S&W revolver.

So it's a nice one. I had also contacted Joe about relining the case.

Once Spring hits hopefully Jack will bring it down and we can shoot it at the house.

No tools but now that he has the bug I'm sure he will be searching for them.

So if we can help out a new collector that would be nice. It's been a rewarding experience for me. Lords knows we need fresh blood no matter what age to continue on.

Great looking gun! Did you get the tools with it? If not they are hard to find and expensive.

I think the screw driver is a easy find. Just keep your eye open on ebay and gunbroker.

You are right, the SAT is the easiest piece to find. That is sight adjusting tool for the collectors. Be prepared to spend $100 at least. It took me around 4 months to find the mop and brush.

.44 Magnums with similar serial numbers were shipping in late 1956 and early 1957, but in no systematic order. One in this range did not ship until 1958.

Great looking gun. Congratulations. But I also feel great sadness at the damage that will be done to your checkbook as you continue with the collection disease.

The damage has been done; this was a busy year but a lot of fun. Already saw a tool for the pre 29 and was struck with immediate sticker shock.

Off to gun show today, just to browse.

Bruce is a great guy. Over the past dozen years or so our collecting kinship has grown to be so much more than that. His family and mine have gone hunting, fishing, camping togeather on several occasions. In addition to being an authority on N Frame .38 Smiths, Bruce is a Civil War Historian and we have toured several battlefields. Tracing the movements of the various units on the field, Bruce was able to show me the place where one of my ancestors fought and was wounded near Fredericksburg.

The fact that he gave up a shot to own this gun for himself and passed it on to a new collector doesn't surprise me one bit.

Thank you all for the nice comments. Let's not forget the thread is about Jack's Pre 29. Hopefully he sends the case off to be reworked.
