I have six guns in that serial number range in my database. They were shipped from mid-1956 to early 1957. Sorry I can't be more specific, but S&W made and shipped guns out of serial number order.

Doc44 is one of the Forum's preeminent experts on S&W .44 Magnums, so you can usually trust his knowledge and his database. My 4-screw .44 Magnum is just a little later than yours (S177963). It was probably manufactured sometime in early 1957 (before S&W started model marking their revolvers, e.g. Model 29), but it didn't ship until July 1958 (according to Doc44). Someday I'll try to obtain a proper presentation case. Do you have any pics of S161873, or are you shopping?

It is one that I am looking at, Thanks

Wow, that is a early one. Is it a 5 screw or 4 screw? My 4 screw has a letter serial 171927 shipped April 1957.

My 5 screw no letter serial S167196. That must be a 5 screw.

Probably can't get much closer by serial number than this one, S161859, which is a 4 inch which shipped in November 1956 to a hardware store in Amarillo. As Doc44 said though, S&W didn't ship them in order so you really need a letter to get the actual shipping date and location to which it shipped. Or, if you were a SWCA member, highly recommended, the good Dr. Jinks will provide a ship date for free. Oh, and we love pictures, here's one of S161859.

Early 44 Magnums

I have S153217, which has the 6 grove forestrap & backstrap, but I don't know if that in itself would indicate years shipped. In any case I've never lettered this one. Below it is an early 29-2 (love it!), which finish is nearly on par with the 5 screw!

I thought this to be a gratuitous moment to sneak my guns under the wire!:D
