Hi all,

I am in the market for a pre-lock snub Model 36 in Nickel or a Model 60. I have been looking at the auction sites and the prices seem to be over all over the map. What is a fair price for a revolver in really nice condition?

Thanks for your insight!

You can get a "Mint" in box 36 Pinned barrel for around $600 and similar 60 for $700.

Careful shopping online will get you either one in the $450 - 500 range. Model 60s tend to be a few dollars higher.

Wow, what a wide open question.

S&W released the Chief's Special in 1950, which became the Model 36 in 1957 (1958) and the Model 60 in 1965.

Depending upon which "Chiefs Special" you want you could pay between $300 and $4,000 in today's market. The changes through the years determine the price, and as usual, the older and more complete the package (i.e., box, tools, paperwork) the higher the price, generally speaking.

Do some research to determine which model and which era you're searching for. Your reward will be an enhanced knowledge base and a more refined idea for the Chiefs Special you're interested in owning.

Have fun. The research and search is more than half the fun.

Cheers!

Gentlemen, Thank you very much for taking the time to post your responses! I appreciate your sharing your knowledge.

The last few 36’s and 60’s I saw in shops went for around $500. Of course, that was before the current mania. These days everything seems to be selling for a $100+ mark up.

I recently picked up a 60-7 for $350 but I think that price is way below the current market. I've been looking for one for quite some time and my patience paid off.

Around here, the Model 36 has dropped considerably in price and the model 60 has fell off but not quite as bad. Model 60's used to fetch $500-550 all day long for just a decent gun with no extras. Now they are in the $400-450 range. I think S&W coming out the the .357 J frame hurt the value of the .38 J frames.

Please count me in line for pre-lock 60s in the $4xx range!
