I ran across a very nice 3" nickel model 36. No box or paperwork. I've just seen pictures. What you can tell by the pictures,I would rate it in the upper 90% condition. Looking for some help to what would be a fair price to offer.

I'd like to try and help, but your question is a bit vague for me.
The nickel Chiefs Special you're looking at could be anywhere from
1958 to 1976 (or from 1966 to 1988 if it's a Model 36-1 with a 3"
Heavy Barrel).

What's the serial number or at least the series? Which thumbpiece
does it have? Are the stocks original, and do they have a diamond
around the screw and nut escutcheons? Round or square butt?

Typically a nickel Chiefs Special brings more than a blue one, all
other things being equal. How much more? Now, there's the
question. Much has to do with the buyer (i.e., how badly do you
want it?).

What Bob said. :)

I would guess a relatively high condition model 36-1 would start in the $500-550 or so range as a baseline. Lots of variables to change that figure.

It's a model 36-1 nickel with 3" barrel. Grip are original. Not a heavy barrel.

If it is a Model 36-1, it is has a Heavy Barrel. The model began in
1966 at the request of the New York Police Department. It
continued until 1988 when the Model 36-3 replaced it.

S&W discontinued the 3" Model 36 with a lightweight barrel in
1976.

I wouldn't pay $750 for what you describe. I would buy a model 60 first.
$600 would be pushing it for me.

Your 90% rating bothers me as a nickel finish so would this include flaking which will only get worst. Not a fan of nickel and would not purchase if the finish is broken.

2 on GI now. One in very good condition with original grips is $725 and the other in good shape with replacement grips is $629. I bought this one last year for $600 or $700. Can't remember.

I prefer the J frame with a 3" barrel and the 36-1 is a great carry gun. I have two in fact. One blue and one nickel. I also have a 36 no dash blue.
