Pre mod 28

Have this old 5 screw pre mod 28 laying in the drawer that I've been thinking of getting rid of but I need a little help with it. First the ser. no. S1165XX I'm thinking may be first year, don't know. Second the gun is still a great shooter and still some what tight, all numbers match with the grips still in great shape. Now about the finish, looks like the gun was left in a leather holster for a long period of time with lots of bluing loss by way of etching. The etching covers half of the cylinder and a small part of the frame. The 4' barrel is still in great shape and like I said this gun still shoots great. Now the tough part whats it worth, As a project gun With a light bead blast and a good bluing job this gun would look real nice and still serve as a carry gun, truck gun, or as a house gun. So what do you think is a fair price for this?

I wouldn't mess with the finish. It will not add to the value in my opinion. A first year five screw in that condition is worth what someone is willing to pay. In the condition described, I would guess that most here would not say over $450 if that much. If bead blasted or reblued, I would think that or less.

You may find someone willing to pay more since it is a low serial numbered "S" series gun, but there are enough out there in good shape that most folks would rather pay more for one with honest bluing loss on the muzzle and cylinder from holster carry than one as you describe. As is, it is not in collector's condition and is a shooter only for most. Messing with the finish will not restore collector value.

The pre Model 28 was introduced in 1954 and the serial number is from 1954 so probably yes.
