pre model 10

What would you guys think of a pre model 10 with s/n in the 750xxx range for $450.00?
Mechanically it's about 90-95%, comesically it is about 80-85% with a really dull blue finish.

The lock up on it is good and tight, 2" bbl, diamond grips, and the minor pitting on top strap. You can barely see the pitting.
The cylinder has a rub to bare metal on one flute. I think it is holster wear. I got the impression that someone carried it and never shot it.
Bore looks new, forcing cone looks new. Local LGS has it.

Is this too much money?

Pitting is a deal breaker for me. Sounds like an old refinish. The pre-war 2" guns are uncommon and cool, but the condition on this one is disappointing IMO. To me $450 is top dollar for a shooter grade M&P and this example doesn't sound like a top dollar gun.

This is a bit of a mystery. If it has no letter prefix to the SN, it is out of the usual number range to be a pre-war gun with a 2" barrel. Does it have the same number on the barrel flat above the ejector rod? If it has a V prefix, a few of these were made during WW II, but it would not be blued with diamond stocks.

If it is a post-war 2" Military & Police (most likely from your description), it sounds a bit high as described. Hope this is helpful.

That does help, I don't remember seeing a prefix at all with the serial# so I will stop in and look at again on Tuesday when I get home from work. It is a square but, I forgot to mention that.

I wish it was in better shape and I also think it is to much money.

They also had a model 10-8 6" that was to die for, looked brand new with the box but I know this would have no collectors value. It would be fun to shoot though, It was $350.00.

I think I'll pass on both of them. The last old smith I bought was a model 28-2 in almost factory new condition. That's the way I like to find them.

sounds high to me. i was at a show last week and turned down an m&p that was about 90% 4" barrrel the seller was wanting $400 for. i was more comfotable at 300 but he stuck to 4.walked away i did.

You want to make sure it isn't a chopped Victory Model. These were commonly cut to 2" losing the front ejector rod lug in the process. Such a gun is worthless, IMO.

LE-28 if you can take a photo , i would like to see it out of curiosity, the serial put's it in the war time production, and i expect saxonpig is correctly suspecting it is a cuttdown gun.
