I found an interesting S&W today at a local shop, it appears to be a pre model 20 H/D 4 inch, nickel finish, when I got back home I checked my 3rd edition and found that the Austin P/D had an order of about 250 of these starting in the serial range of
S 88xxx as does this one does.

My question is does anyone have a list of serial #'s that were for APD. My book says the collector's edition has them in it (I might need one of those) any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

They're not hard to identify. As mentioned above, most are marked 'Austin PD' with a rack number on the back strap. I believe a few were marked 'APD'. I had one years ago in the 89XXX serial range - till I traded it to another member here for a pre war Model of 1926. Mine was marked 'Austin PD'.

I have all the serial numbers for the APD guns, so pm me the serial number and i'll let you know. DPS also had guns in the same serial number range.

I do not have the full serial # at this time, I think it was S 881xx and it does not have any APD stamping on it. I have one photo, but a dead phone will upload tomorrow.

Thank for the responses.

It appears that barrel has been shortened to around 3-1/2". Here's what a full four inch barrel looks like. This is a .44, but they used the same barrel forging for both calibers.

I would not have walked away from it unless the price was really unreasonable.

A special thanks to 1Aspenhill for his help with this old Heavy Duty, due to the serial number it is not an Austin P/D revolver. I decided not to pursue it due to condition and the modifications it has (the cut barrel).

The shop is asking $699.00 + tax.
