I found a pre model 24 four inch barrel with matching numbers on the cylinder, frame, barrel and ejector at a gunshop. The gun is in 95% condition wearing a pair of minty pre 29 coke bottle grips.Does anyone know how many were made in a 4" barrel? And the value of the gun?No pictures yet.

It is listed as "scarce" and worth twice a standard 6.5" model, so my guess based on this would be $1500-1800. No production numbers noted. Perhaps someone has seen one sell recently and knows a more accurate price. Hope this is helpful.

TThe SCSW has the 4" listed as "Scarce"", the 5" as rare , and 5.5" as very rare.
5050 reported manufactured serials S75,000 to S263,000.
Then says premium 4" 200%......5" 300%.....5.5" 400% .
Also says pre 24 rare 4"
"95 % to 98 %" listed at $3,750 David Carrol, 2006.

Has price range when published in 2006 as ANIB $1600, Exc $900, VG $500, Good $385, Poor $200.

Good luck and share some pictures when you get it.

I've never seen an official production number for the 4" variation. I would guess around 300-350 were made. The 5 1/2" is so rare that I don't know of anyone who has seen one. I would estimate the value in the $3000 - $3500 range.

$3-4000 depending on eye appeal and what that 95% actually looks like.
I've never seen one sell below 3 in modern times.

Also, if the stocks are "Cokes" they are worth $300-$500 but they are not original to the gun.

Assuming the gun is original you scored. Any possibility the barrel has been cut or swapped?

The barrel looks original, and Its numbered to the frame.I guess a letter would tell for sure.I'll letter the gun and most likely I'll seperate the gun from the cokes and sell them off.Mike

Letter the gun BEFORE you split them up. ASK Roy about the cokes.

Please tell me what shop has the gun. I will call them and offer them $2500. Looks like that is how it's done these days. Nice score!

I bought a 4" Pre 24 with "Cokes" in a S&W Presentation Case complete with the cardboard shipping carton and receipt at a small town auction a few years ago. I paid $650.00 OTD, fortunate for me there were not any knowledgeable S&W guys amoung the other bidders. I traded that gun straight across for a 5" a little later, unfortunately the guy that had the 4" passed away a few years later and his widow is not selling any of his guns. I tired in vain to buy the gun back from his estate.

Did It ship from the factory with the cokes?

A couple more details about the pre 24.The serial number s1418xx could give it a shipping date in 1956.Just around the time they started shipping guns with cokes. It is the high polished blue finish not the matte blue.I think this adds alittle value to it.

Most likely the gun shipped in 1955. I have a pair of 1950 Target 44s that are S140000 and S143000 (so this one falls right between them) and they shipped in April and October of 1955.

Also, has anyone EVER documented a gun other than a 29 or a 57 shipping with "Cokes?" First of all I doubt any did and if there were any so equipped I suspect the letter would not prove it. Does a letter ever say "shipped with Cokes?" Seems like all they say is "shipped with target stocks."
