Hello
I'm aware that sight configurations can differ on the post-war .357 Magnums (pre-1957). My question is about a 1951 .357 Magnum (S833xx) with partridge front sight. The face of the sight is notched and the notch holds a square gold bead. Is this a correct sight for the gun? Everything else on the gun is clearly original, with serial numbers on the grip, cylinder, barrel and right grip panel all matching.
Thanks for any info.

First of all it's Patridge not partridge. The sight was designed by a man named Patridge and is named for him.

I believe this type of sight is the "call bead" and is seen fairly often on the pre-war Registered Magnums but I am not sure if it was readily available in 1951. S&W would do just about anything on special order back then, and if it is factory original it would be most unique and of interest to collectors. However, I would bet it was added after it left the factory.

For $50 you might be able to find out for sure. The historical letter on this gun should indicate the fact that it carries a special order sight if that is indeed the case.

Thanks, Pig (notice I didn't sneak an "r" into that word!):)

I plan to request a letter on the gun, so I guess I'll find out. I appreciate the info.

Sorry about the stray "r" in the sight name. I'm duly chastised.

Yes, I have never seen a square one.

Why are people calling me pig all of a sudden? Please don't.

Sorry SaxonPig
I didn't mean any offense. Given the "r" issue, I just thought it would be humorous to leave off the Saxon part and make a joke about "pig" versus "prig."
Hope we're okay . . .

I have a S&W .357 Mag. Pre-Model 27 Five Screw, 3-1/2" barell, gold inlay front sight, S 100 XXX serial number, Mint Condition, bright blue with Class A factory engraving shipped from factory in Oct. 1953.

Have any idea what it may be worth?

I'd love to see a picture of it....Is it all original?
Welcome Too....and I'd suggest to start my your own thread with it.
