I purchased this old 1956-1957 31/2 inch pre 27 several years ago it belonged to a sheriff here in Texas in the 60's so it's been carried quiet a bit but shoots great. I was wondering if the red sight insert is original to the gun or is it a modification

It could be either. Closer pics might help us decide.

Here are a couple of close up pics

On the one hand, a letter will almost certainly answer your question.

On the other hand, Lee is one of very few who've "been there and done that" when it comes to what's what on pretty much any S&W product--which is to say some might be inclined to disagree with his call; but they're not going to be betting any money on it!

Thanks for the replies. It really doesn't matter to much I was just wondering. I have no intention of getting rid of it anytime soon

The red ramp is not positioned in the same way the factory ones are done. It seems not to have enough space between the bottom of the red insert and the top of the ramp base. That leads me to believe it was an add-on.

One of my Associates had one of those.
I think it was the only Revolver he owned.
He was a Skeet Shooter, had a bunch of pricey Shotguns.
He was from Stephenville.
