Have a pre-27 that has a bit of play fore and aft along the horizotal cylinder axis, also a bit of movement side to side of the cylinder. The cylinder touches the frame when opened causing it to rub just ahead of the frame stud. I think it will need a new center pin and maybe an oversized cylinder stop. The cylinder rubbing the frame is a concern. Any ideas?

Hi there,

Appears you have a bit of cylinder end shake and a lot of other wear. Must have been used a lot. Sounds as if you have identified most of the issues. Find a good S&W mechanic and all of those issues can be corrected.

The cylinder should not be anywhere near touching the frame. I suspect a bent yoke barrel. Definitely find someone who knows how to repair these issues. None are a difficult fix, normally.

replace the cylinder stop and repair the endshake issue, should take care of most of the problem. if anything else is bad you will know by the time your done.

Send it home to be repaired. They have the tools and knowledge to do it right.

don't panic if s&w refuses to do it, they are not difficult repairs. any competent gunsmith should be able to handle the job. i do such repairs to my own guns and have had good luck.
