Pre Model 28 trigger

I picked up a 4" Pre Model 28 last week and have a question about the trigger. Every S&W I've had, especially the older ones, have had a very smooth double action pull so I've never done any trigger work. T

his one "sticks" about 1/4 of the way through the pull. It's a very noticeable sticking point and when I pull through it, the rest of the DA pull is very smooth.

The seller mentioned that the gun has a Wolf (maybe a Wilson?) spring kit installed. Would a spring change help things or do I need to see a 'smith?

The SA trigger is like glass, no worries there.

All "modern" K/L/N use the same mainspring so if you have one you could always try to swap them and see if it helps. It could be that the spring was bent to lighten the pull. Also make sure that the strain screw is all the way in.
Most likely the problem is somewhere else, hard to tell without seeing the gun. If you do not have an extra spring handy I may have one you can borrow somewhere...

Thanks Daniel. I've got a 6" 28-2 here as well. I'll swap springs and check that screw as you suggest. I'm sure that counting on a spring change is wishful thinking though...

You never know, I had a pre-10 that had the same issue. It turned out that the strain screw was so loose at some point that the spring got bent. I actually carried that gun for a while until one day I picked it up and the spring had just snapped. I now replace all mainsprings systematically if the gun may see any "serious" use.

First check would be the main spring strain screw. If is has been loosened, the main spring can "knuckle". You can feel this on single action especially. You might also check the cylinder face. It could be rubbing the barrel, which would probably mean cylinder end shake. Dirt under the extractor could be a problem too. Actually, to narrow the above down, try the action with the cylinder out. This will narrow it down to either they internal action or cylinder.
