I believe I have a pre model 36. It has no model number on it. I BELIEVE it is a "Chief's Special". It has adjustable sights, 2" barrel. Serial number is: 149934. Can anyone advise when it was built, and what it might be worth ? Thanks.

It was likely shipped in the mid-1950s, before model stamping. However, if it has an adjustable rear sight it may be a rare Target model. Photos would definitely help here.

My notes put that serial number between 1958 and 1962 if it's a Chief. If it were that year(s) it should have a numbered model number. That and the target sights suggest to me it's a weirdo.

Pics? Please?

I'm going to ask the obvious question.
Is it a 5 shot or is it a 6 shot?
That narrows the field greatly.

Pre Model 36

Here are some quick photos. Thanks.

Jaymo: It's a five shot. I have the original wooden grips. Just had these rubber grips on for the range. I bought the gun used in 1968 or 1969.

Definitely looks like a J frame to me.
I've never seen one that old, with adjustable sights.
Then again, I'd never seen a DA Merwin, Hulbert .32, until I saw one yesterday.

It appears to be a "Chiefs Special Target"

From "The Book" -

" ...Random and limited production of about 2136. The highest percentage of Chief Special targets are marked M36 or M36-1 or have no designation at all, leaving the remainder marked model 50s. ..."

Likely an older Chiefs Special frame (pre-model number) used to build a Target gun. Sorry for the inaccurate ship year info. Definitely worth a factory historical letter to confirm it was done by S & W.

S&W Pre Model 36 ?

I have found the letter form and will send it off to S&W and get the scoop on my little S&W. I'll post the results. Thanks for all who provided input. I need a concealed carry weapon and this one is just not right for me as I prefer to carry in my pocket. I did carry it as a concealed off duty weapon in the 70s when I was a cop in the KC, Mo. area. But as a pocket weapon, the sights just provide too many opportunities for catching on clothes if drawn in a hurry.

Your gun is JUST above the serial number range 149811-149914 for a known group of Chief Targets.
Definitely worth getting a letter on it.

OH MY GOODNESS! In the world of the many variations of the Chief Special, a pre-Model 36 with target sights is one of the shining stars. It may not be the best gun for carrying in your pocket, but it would sure fit into a place of honor at my humble abode. That one is a real treasure.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely jealous, but do "target sights" and "snub nose" really belong in the same sentence?
Kinda like teats on a boar hog.

CST!

Sir, you have a Chief's Special Target (CST). These are rare guns built from 1955 thru the mid 1970s in limited number production runs. Your gun is from the run of 198 guns built in 1959 in serial number block #149811-#150133. These guns were SB with the second and third flat latch style. The grips you mentioned should have the serial number stamped in the right grip panel to be the original grips for this gun, which will enhance the value of the gun. Many of US would buy you a NEW centennial for pocket carry in trade for that gun!

Shouldn't a 1958 gun have the model number stamped on?
That's a beautiful target model Chief. (but lose the ugly pachmayr grips!) How about a photo with the stock magnas?
I can definitely see where both the adjustable rear sight & the shark-fin up front would snag on everything. I'd retire that gun to range and BBQ duty and buy a bobbed standard-model Chief for carrying. BTW that'd make a great trail gun, you could sight it in to be dead on the money for head shots on grouse etc.

USMCJS,

Nice rare gun! You have a Model of 1953 New J frame, Chief Special Target which started with a 4 screw side plate but yours is most likely a 3 screw w/that serial #. It's a 'pre model 36' as you said from the 1959 production run of 198 described below. The order for stamping frames with Model #s came down in 1957, but as always with S&W, there were many frames in production already that didn't get stamped. After a long transition period, all Smith's models eventually were stamped with their respective model #s.

Here's a brief history of all J frame target model production of BLUE Models 36, 37, 50, the earliest of them not model stamped:

Chiefs Special Targets were un-cataloged, sporadic production from 1955 thru 1990. The first regular production began in 1996 w/the Mod 60-10. Total production reported by SCSW is 2136 up thru 1978 and serial numbered in the Mod 36 serial range.

* 312 in 1954-55, Pre Model 37, 3 ½" barrel, reportedly but unconfirmed. These are not in the final count of 2136.

* First run of 100 in 1955, Pre Model 36, # range 55050-57919, 2" Sq butt, 2nd style flat latch, 4 screw frames, pre war style hammer.

* 14 in 1956, Pre model 36, 2nd style flat latch, some may have 4 screw frames.

* 198 in 1959, Model 36, # range 149811-150133, 2" Sq Butt, 2nd and 3rd style flat latch.

* Sporadic from 1965 – 1975, Mod 50, 2" and 3", Rd or Sq Butt, early w/3rd style flat latch and/or diamond grips, a few with 3" bbl, RR front, w/o rear sight and wide trigger.

* 1006 in 1966, Model 36, # 391773-392778, 2" Sq Butt. 3rd style Flat latch or standard TP with diamond grips.

* 568 made in 1973-1975, Mod 50, # 930j45-936j19, 2" Sq Butt, standard thumbpiece. 3 known in nickel that lettered as 36-1, SCSW p. 217, which appear to be left over from this Mod 50 production.

* 213 in 1975 (only 202 sold), Model 36-1 (-1 due to HB), # range 2j3134-2j3347 (actually 214 S/Ns), with a front sight base and pinned 3" HB (w/o barrel shroud), and Sq Butt. Appear to be the only Targets with ramp base front sight prior to the Mod 36-6s with full shroud. Special feature code on box label: G347.

* 37 in 1978, Mod 50, prefix # range 933j-936j, 2", Sq Butt. Unknown if they have front sight ramp base.

* 615 in 1989, Mod 36-6, 3" HB, front sight ramp base, full lug and Rd Butt, .340 combat trigger, black bead blasted, un-cataloged.

* 1991, Mod 36-8 with full-lug, limited edition; no more info known to me.

Correction toi total!

I have a factory letter from Mr. Jinks dated 20 Jan 2004 on a model 50 that I have and in the letter he wrote;
"This model designation(mod 50) was assigned to the gun in 1962 but was not stamped on any models until 1973. The total production of the model 50 CST to date is 1132 units, with a total production of target sighted Model 36 & 50 being 2517 units from 1955 to 1977."
