Presentation Case refurbishment

Posting this here because the revolver fits the time frame. Anyway last week I purchased a S&W revolver that came in a different type of Presentation case along with a plastic box.
It has a felt? covering over a fitted foam liner. It is NOT the same as regular presentation cases. The cloth covering is deteriorationg and the adhesive has broken down, the foam itself is in good condition. Randy @RT44nut fixed me up with some traditional case liners. Not sure if the liner can or should be flocked; should I buy some cloth and adhesive since that's closer to what was original.
Y'alls thoughts?

According to the "SCSW 5th Ed.", S&W's Performance Center only produced the Schofield Model of 2000 for about 3 or 4 years (2000-2003). Yours looks to be in excellent or ANIB condition. Most of the mahogany presentation cases that we're used to seeing were made from around 1960-1981, and those had blue flocked inserts. There were some with a blue satin lining, but I believe they were mostly for early Model 57s. More recent presentation cases were provided with PC special releases and commemorative revolvers or as a special order item. I do not know what type of cloth liner material was used in your presentation case, but I would suggest finding something very similar and gluing it in place as opposed to applying flocking. Hopefully some of our more knowledgeable Forum members will be along soon to chime in. Good luck!

I did one of these several moths ago, completed picture below. I purchased cloth that was very similar to the original from JoAnns fabrics who is out of business and glued in place. I would not recommend flocking on soft foam.

@RT44nut What did you use for glue? I was thinking headliner adhesive. I expect Hobby Lobby has some cloth.
@Hawg Rider other than a light turn line the gun appears unfired. I did order a box of HSM 45 Schofield ammo.

I use a contact adhesive. Be sure and test it on a small area. Some will turn the foam into a glob. I wonder how I know.

I’m not familiar with S&W presentation cases but it seems odd that they would use foam. I admit I’m used to really old cases and the interiors were all made of wood covered with felt.
I mimicked that with what I make using a scroll saw to make the pattern cut-outs and covering them with flocking. The “paint on” glue is color matched to the flocking. (Google it if interested). The lid inserts were matching colored felt over foam. Never had a problem with the flocking. Never had any luck trying to use felt to cover the cut out recess for the pistol or dividers.

Nice work. Way above my skill set. Here's a link to some earlier cases with styrofoam or plastic lines and @RT44nut new liners.

Last month I posted about a Model 25 I was contemplating buying, the case had the worst flocked styrofoam liners that I've come across .
I was looking for options on replacing the liners and y'all gave me some in addition to what I could find on the interweb.
I did buy the revolver and reached out to @RT44nut for new liners. In addition I needed liner sets for a 27 and a 29. We worked out a deal and he quickly got them to me.
Replaced the liners, cleaned up the cases. Very pleased with the results. I have another model 29 case that's showing some wear. When the time comes I...

Just take your time, map out the order to perform the steps and you should have good results.

Can’t count the number of time I got ahead of myself and had to ‘go back’ or start over.

Several years ago a Marlin 39 came into my shop. It was some kind of special anniversary highly engraved model in a special factory box that was lined with green felt. Unfortunately every place the metal touched the felt it was heavily rusted and pitted. A real shame because the gun was beautiful in every way. I assume some cloth dyes can be corrosive, because the gun was unfired and had been properly stored. So even though I am in the process of building a box myself, I think washing material before glueing would be a good idea, then pray and check frequently.

A little advice to the OP! Do Not use flocking on styrofoam! The flocking will form a crust on the styrofoam which cracks over time with a gun laying on it! 3M 77 is an excellent spray on adhesive for cloth on foam.
