My hair dresser recently got her license to carry and she's looking for a revolver, (and has for several months). She wants a revolver for home defense and/or car gun. I have a used 686 plus and a 586, new and unfired gun in the safe. I like my 686+ more and would consider offering the other revolver to her as a gun for the home. What is a fair price for a never fired 586 (with lock)?

500 bucks and your hairdresser gets a great deal for the 586

I think the problem here is we are talking apples and oranges. You are trying to sell her a unfired gun and want to collect the price for a gun in that condition. What she needs is nice used gun in just the right size and caliber to fit her. Exterior condition won't matter as long as it shoots smooth and is not a caliber that recoils too much for her. Be a good guy and take her to the LGS to see what they have for her.

I've made that suggestion over and over and apparently, she has. People either don't have a selection in stock or don't have the revolver she's interested in. I've also mentioned just going to local stores and looking at their used guns. For whatever reason, she hasn't liked anything in stock.

Have her try it

Not sure if I missed this but has she dry fired it and handled it to make sure it’s at least good for her to hold and use?

No reason a woman with normal hand strength can't handle a 4 inch 586 given a little instruction and practice. I would take her to the range and let her try it. If she likes it, good to go.

Price? I would check out what new 586's are going for, then knock off $100, or a little more if you are feeling generous?

Unless she's a big burly gal, a 357 magnum is going to probably be more gun than she wants, and a pristine 586 just doesn't seem like the best choice.
A mechanically sound but appearance challenged M10 with some gold dot +P ammo sounds like a more appropriate alternative to me. At least that's more along the lines of what I'd recommend for most women I know, my wife included.
Simple, effective, moderate recoil, medium size and weight, good value for the $. Especially if you can get her a -6 or -8 with the heavy (rather than tapered) barrel.

Not sure I understand the logic of recommending a .38 over the .357. The 586 handles both and will have less recoil due to the added weight for both cartridges.

As far as recoil, my wife is not big and burly and can handle .357 out of a 386 Nightguard snubby.
