price check: S&w 4040

I would say about right, but if you can get them to haggle, getting a good 4040PD for less than five bills, with box, is a good day at the office. ;)

I looked for one of those for years, there were none to be found in metro Atlanta. This past week I bought a Sig P239 .40 S&W. It is the same overall size as the S&W 4040pd, though heavier. The Sig is still in production, the S&W is not. Magazines, stocks, sights, and internal parts are readily available for the Sig, but not the S&W.

I think $500.00 is high for a 80% condition gun. I gave a good bit less for my Sig.

You could get a 4040PD in 80% condition for less, but it's not a bad price either, considering the fact that you don't see many for sale. I think I paid about $25 less for my first 4040, and it was pretty well used.

It's a good model, and parts, including magazines, stocks, sights, and springs, are still being made and sold by major retailers, and AFAIK, also by S&W themselves. Parts like grips, mainspring, and magazine springs will be the same as the model 3913, and most of the internals are also universal 3rd Gen parts. Brownell's has had NIB 4040 mags in stock for the last year or so (though I haven't checked lately).

If you do get it, be sure to get a couple of extra mags as TercGen has mentioned. The 4040PD's mag is one-of-a-kind, and actually has a little single ball bearing in it to facilitate feeding. If I were a 40S&W guy still, the 4040PD would be my carry gun.

You can also get two different baseplates -- one flat, and one with a finger extension, if you look hard.
