I recently saw a Model 610 with a 4" barrel for $695. Comes with box and manual.

Would this be a fair price? I have only seen 6" models.

*UPDATE*
I went back to the gun shop with it in mind to purchase this gun. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was sporting a $645 price tag, not $695.
However, I stood by the used case for fifteen minutes, watching three employees talk about their upcoming weekend plans. After another fifteen minutes, I decided I didn't want to purchase a gun from a shop that refused to even acknowledge I was there. I'm hard to miss at 6'2" and 220lbs.
Even though I would have spent $700 (Tax and and all) in that shop, just being ignored soured the whole experience.
I don't think I will be heading back that way anytime soon.

I have the 3in,5in and 6.5in Model 610's but, not the 4inch one.
I hadn't heard that S&W had stopped production of them.
I better be on the look out for one down in Tulsa this weekend

I guess it depends on how you feel? Some folks want to look and be given some time not being bothered. They should of acknowledged you at least. I would of at least let them know how you felt. Life is to short to walk away mad, or unhappy.

645 for a used 4 inch 610 is IMO just a bit high. I purchased my 3 1/2 inch 610 in September 2009 brand spanking new and it only cost me 775. However, they are fairly rare on the used market so the shop was probably pricing it a bit high in the hope that someone would be willing to pay that much. Thing is that most gun shops leave a lot of negotiating room in their pricing, so without much effort you might be able to talk them down to 550 or so. Since they treated you rudely, I would suggest going back and getting even by offering 500 bucks cash.

As for why, compare the price of the 40 S&W to almost any other major caliber, currently at one Walmart nearby the 40 S&W is 3 dollars a box cheaper than 9mm. I put my 38's and 357 in the safe and bought the 610 simply because it's so much easier for find ammo for and I save between 8 and 12 dollars a box on ammo.

BTW, I would love to reload, problem is that not one single gun shop I've checked in my area can get primers. One told me that Federal currently has a minimum order quantity of 1 million primers, which he can't come close to affording, much less being willing to take the risk of purchasing that many.
