I have a 617-6 (with internal lock), 10-shot cylinder, with a 4" barrel ( which i prefer over 6") on hold at a dealers, said to be 95% condition, priced at $575, which seems a bit high to me. Blue Book says way less than that, but I don't necessarily trust Blue Book assessments of what is happening. Didn't find much on GunBroker, GunsAmerica has several listed by dealers, quite high pricing, but that's sort of to be expected I figure....what do y'all think? Stop quibbling and buy it? Or is that too high? I think I could order a new one for not too much more than that.
I have been giving lessons to new shooters, and don't really have a good .22 revolver for that purpose, sold my K22 in a weak moment, and only have a m.34 snubby (which I love, but probly not best instructional piece, the new students need to hit something to feel good about it...)
I start them with bolt action rifle, but some are asking for handgun, and I would rather start them on handguns with a revolver than a pistol, have several Rugers for that.

I just bought a super clean 617-1 6" 6shot with Pac grips for 500shipped. Hunt2000 just bought the 4" from the same place for the same price search him if you want for pics it was an excellent buy

I bought a 617-6, super clean with docs, lock, and box for $525 shipped but it took a while to find it. They seem to be very popular, and if I wanted to sell it I could easily get more than what I paid from what I see they are selling for here in California.

Last month that may have been slightly high, this month who knows. Gun prices rise weekly in my part of the world. If I didn't have my 617's I think I'd buy at that price. And it hasn't been THAT long ago you could by these things all day long brand new for less than $500. Have mercy!!!!!!!

That is a great price. I just paid $729 for the exact same thing brand new. At the price I got it, some would say I paid too much but it was well worth it. The purchase was also a point of principle for me as it was tax free and the gov'ment did not get any piece of it.

I'd say it's a fair price for the most popular barrel length for the 617. They don't show up for sale all that often. Here's a chart from data ending September 22, 2009 where the trend line was at about $540:

Smith & Wesson 617 Plus Revolver in .22, Long Rifle 4-in Bbl. Bluebook of Gun Values (30th Edition) indicates between $466 in 98% condition and $616 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 29 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $650 over a period of 6 Yrs 0 Mos ending September 22, 2009. The average price as of that date was $477. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights, all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $916.

OK, I hear you...

thanks to all, think I will just dig out the plastic, take a deep breath, and plunge...a year from now, who will remember. Have to budget some $ for those slick speedloaders too, the DS-10 (?)...I have it bookmarked somewhere.

I paid 575 a little over a year ago for mine new. They are asking $675 now and don't have them in stock..worth every penny..buy and when you shoot it..you will smile!

You can't find that 10 shot 617 in 4" in my area for anywhere near that price.
I've been looking.

While its not a 4in ( I already have 2 of them) I just picked up a NIB 6in No dash full target with finger groove stocks for $575 OTD It has the paper work and unopened tool kit also. It was a bit more than I wanted to pay but,,, anymore around here you don't see to many under $550-$600 used
