I just picked up 5000 Federal small pistol primers at my local gun store for $139.00.

I've had primers on backorder at Cabelas since about early June. There was only a 2-3 week wait then -I just checked Cabela's site for small pistol and large pistol primers. CCI, Federal, Mag-tech, and Winchester primers have a 6-7 week wait--Remington just says backorder with no time frame.
but won't buy until the price comes down
Well, it look pretty grim for now, but I expect it will even out shortly. Are you finding plenty of ammo? That's a problem, too, right now.
I usually can find ammo when I need it. Have been thinking of getting into reloading, but the whole primer issue is giving me serious doubts.
I wouldn't let that stop me. The primer issue is a temporary thing. It's happened in the past and will happen again. Primers can be found sporadically and even at $36.00 per brick, reloads are way cheaper.
I just ran some numbers: for my 38 spl loads, my cost per 50 rounds was $5.33 using primers that cost me $26.99+tax per m. The cost per 50 using the primers I paid 36.00 per m (tax included) for was $5.73. Now given the fact that the cheapest 38 spl target ammo on the shelf I've seen around here runs $16.99 a box, reloading is still way cheaper.
