Primer prices and availability at the mail order houses?

I just checked Cabela's site for small pistol and large pistol primers. CCI, Federal, Mag-tech, and Winchester primers have a 6-7 week wait--Remington just says backorder with no time frame.
I've had primers on backorder at Cabelas since about early June. There was only a 2-3 week wait then -:).

Why pay the Hazmat fee? Because there are no local stores that carry them.

at a gun show in atlanta this past saturday, 12/13, i gave $36.00 + tax for 1000 large rifle, cci blue box. OUCH! had to have 'em, so i got 'em......no haz-mat fees, though

I just bought online and paid 28.50 and 29.00 per 1000 for wolf brand then 22.50 haz-mat and shipping. I have no choice since no one handles them close by. I stayed on backorder for 4 months at cabelas and finally gave up and ordered Wolf from Wideners.

Well, it look pretty grim for now, but I expect it will even out shortly. Are you finding plenty of ammo? That's a problem, too, right now.

I usually can find ammo when I need it. Have been thinking of getting into reloading, but the whole primer issue is giving me serious doubts.

I wouldn't let that stop me. The primer issue is a temporary thing. It's happened in the past and will happen again. Primers can be found sporadically and even at $36.00 per brick, reloads are way cheaper.

I just ran some numbers: for my 38 spl loads, my cost per 50 rounds was $5.33 using primers that cost me $26.99+tax per m. The cost per 50 using the primers I paid 36.00 per m (tax included) for was $5.73. Now given the fact that the cheapest 38 spl target ammo on the shelf I've seen around here runs $16.99 a box, reloading is still way cheaper.

i would have to agree that reloading is still cheaper than purchasing new ammo, especially in the magnum calibers. economical or not, i couldn't find .380 here in the atlanta area, well i could find it but it was $35.00 per 50, so i just made my own regardless of the cost..........

Recently I was visiting some relatives in Corpus and went to a large gun store where I had, 16 months ago, purchased a brick of Federal small pistol primers for 27 bucks. Today, any primer was $10 per 100. Not 1000, 100. I just looked at him. He didn't smile. I almost said something smart-assed but he was armed and he owned the store. The rest of his prices were not out of line. Just primers. One thing I did notice on my journey home as I hit about 8 gun stores/pawn shops was that all the owners said there were no S&W revolvers coming in.

Primers

I did see lot's of assorted primer at the Cabales store in Hazlewood, MO (St.Louis) last week in the $30.00 price range, so if you have a local Cabalas store check it out.

And today at the Dunn's Store in Pevely, Mo south of St.Louis they had plenty of assorted primers in stock.

Maybe the shortage is coming to an end.

The primer shortage seems to be easing. The online sources (Widners,Powder valley,Midsouth etc) are starting to show some primers.

I was able to buy 5000 Federal SP that with shipping and hazMat were still cheaper than what I can find locally.
