My "PDWs" have all been the boring old revolver or traditional semi-auto pistol types. I usually had other weapons available, but figured if I ever really needed a firearm right now, it would be the pistol or revolver I had on me. I was right. No time to go back to the car, to get a shotgun or super trick pistol/rifle "PDW" thing with all manner of super Kool accoutrements attached out of the vehicle pistol safe, under the seat, out of the trunk, etc. etc...
It's why it gets discussed in the home defense context for civilian use. It's also why in the military context its a weapon that is still considered light enough for the solider to keep on their person. Think M1 Carbine, or any of several options carried by Israeli reservists.
But I agree. There is a difference. Several people in this thread have referred to their normal defensive handgun as their "PDW", not really understanding the distinction.
I am also saying I'd much rather see people calling those super trick super kool whatever's a "PDW" rather than an "assault rifle", etc as it plays better with the anti gun folks looking for reasons to ban things.

From a purely 2A perspective, I think it's also a strategic error for any of us to downplay a class of firearms as not being necessary, particularly for self defense.
I conceal carry every day all day and have done so for 39 years. But realistically on any given day you will most likely find me carrying either a single stack semi auto and a spare mag, or a revolver and a speed loader.
I have plenty of double stack high capacity magazine pistols (as well as a few 'PDW" that I'd never carry in my normal day, but that make good home defense weapons), but they are not my first choice for daily concealed carry.
In that regard would a high capacity magazine ban affect my ability to defend myself personally? Not really.
But at the same time I'm not going to sit around and denigrate the need for or value of high capacity magazine pistols that someone else my choose to carry. Same with the "PDW", or the short (and in my opinion incredibly stupid) 8" AR pistols in 5.56x45. It might not be my thing, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have perceived utility for self defense for someone. I may debate the pros and cons and at least advise people to make a well considered choice. But none of us should be suggesting limiting those choices would not impact a person's ability to defend themselves.
