PDW's

My "PDWs" have all been the boring old revolver or traditional semi-auto pistol types. I usually had other weapons available, but figured if I ever really needed a firearm right now, it would be the pistol or revolver I had on me. I was right. No time to go back to the car, to get a shotgun or super trick pistol/rifle "PDW" thing with all manner of super Kool accoutrements attached out of the vehicle pistol safe, under the seat, out of the trunk, etc. etc...

It's why it gets discussed in the home defense context for civilian use. It's also why in the military context its a weapon that is still considered light enough for the solider to keep on their person. Think M1 Carbine, or any of several options carried by Israeli reservists.

But I agree. There is a difference. Several people in this thread have referred to their normal defensive handgun as their "PDW", not really understanding the distinction.

I am also saying I'd much rather see people calling those super trick super kool whatever's a "PDW" rather than an "assault rifle", etc as it plays better with the anti gun folks looking for reasons to ban things.

From a purely 2A perspective, I think it's also a strategic error for any of us to downplay a class of firearms as not being necessary, particularly for self defense.

I conceal carry every day all day and have done so for 39 years. But realistically on any given day you will most likely find me carrying either a single stack semi auto and a spare mag, or a revolver and a speed loader.

I have plenty of double stack high capacity magazine pistols (as well as a few 'PDW" that I'd never carry in my normal day, but that make good home defense weapons), but they are not my first choice for daily concealed carry.

In that regard would a high capacity magazine ban affect my ability to defend myself personally? Not really.

But at the same time I'm not going to sit around and denigrate the need for or value of high capacity magazine pistols that someone else my choose to carry. Same with the "PDW", or the short (and in my opinion incredibly stupid) 8" AR pistols in 5.56x45. It might not be my thing, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have perceived utility for self defense for someone. I may debate the pros and cons and at least advise people to make a well considered choice. But none of us should be suggesting limiting those choices would not impact a person's ability to defend themselves.

Have to guess with many acronyms as here on this forum with PDW and IIRC. But that's OK...that is the acronym for OK. Dang, now forgot the thread title...but that's OK. Old and grouchy today. Shoulda just let it go.
TOO many acronyms and with the amount of magazines and ammo you guys have you must be TERRIBLE SHOTS or expecting the Nicaraguan paratroopers at any moment or Lee Marvin caught in the revolving door. I mean seriously. You cannot guess what is going to happen and IMHO you just screw yourself up trying to.

PDW think SHTF situations. Watts riots, 2020 in a bunch of cities.

Back in 68 Dad [Police Capt] came home and told Mom and me that "Intelligence" was rioters were planning to bring the "rioting" out to the Suburbs. All the patrol cars got a long gun and Dad brought his M-1 Carbine home "in case he got called out."

Not trying to"guessing what's going to happen" just prepared...... and it's a fun gun to take to the range!!!

As I said earlier mine is a Beretta CX-4 9mm that takes the same mags as my 92 Centurion effective range IMO is 100 yds.

I had a B&T 9mm PDW as well as Sig MPX. I also had a CZ Scorpion. While fun enough to plink around with, I lost interest in them very quickly. Considering the short barrels, I failed to see how my Glock 19X with a light on it and the 20 round mag was not basically just as effective. If I want to shoulder a gun, it will be my 590A1 with 20" barrel or my A2 configured AR15. I am done with them. I am not a tier one operator, mall ninja, or wannabe Call of Duty commando. I already played that game for real several decades ago, courtesy of the USMC.

What is a tier one operator? The way you used it in the sentence sounds as if it might be a nice way of saying "squirrel", but maybe I misinterpreted.

It's a useful tool and has more practical accuracy than a pistol, but to my thinking - too big to carry and not much more powerful than a handgun in the same chambering. Where do I buy one? 😀

This is possibly closest to my thinking in a country so pathetic where we are not allowed to carry guns and cant hunt or take a backup pistol so you want to shoot a pistol caliber at an varmint or like you need that pistol caliber in a carbine anyway.

In the case of USA I would think anyone going into bear country or the like wants to carry and a caliber greater than 9mm dont know if there are many PDWs at all in the 44mag+ size that I have seen but they would be welcomed by shooters here and I think in the USA if you are serious about trail carry and may feel similar about home defense with subsonics in those calibers for play out to 100yds max??

Be safe, have fun...

This is where lever-action carbines shine. .357, .44, .45LC are ideal

I love to go shooting wild pigs which are running quite high numbers in Australia at the moment and 44Mag in a lever would be my go to caliber in the scrub we often chase them in but use a kick pad in case I go through 50+ shots in a day (if I dont take the 44 because its more open country I take a 308)
