Primer Shortage, slightly different question than normal...kind of

Our city has been out of small pistol primers for 6 months now. Quite a few shooter's around here are going through 2000 rds. a month. It is not likely that enough stock will come in to satisfy the need. To some my normal purchases would be considered hoarding by some, especially if they were unable to purchase what they needed. But I don't believe that if I just cut back on my hobby, didn't shoot as much that anyone would learn a "message". I would be surprised if the reloading industry is running 24/7 trying to supply the needs of everyone. Rather, I think they like the current situation as they are selling everything at a better price. Now if only they would threaten to ban American automobiles, we could really jump start the economy.

Midway did have some for a short time, Got an email stating they were in stock. Jumped on their site ordered 5,000 & powder. When I went to check out there was no option for local pickup & a $45.00 hazmat charge. As I only live a hour away I wanted to pick them up and save the hazmat charge. By the time I got someone on the phone to find out why local pickup was not available they sold out. Seems if I would of ordered the primers seperate from the powder, I would have had the option for LPU. All powder is drop shipped thus 2 hazmat charges 1 for the primers and one for the powder. So here I sit with an empty primer cache. Smarter and somewhat wiser but still primerless.

I think the poor fellow who gave the 115.00 for the primers on the gunbroker auction is going to feel foolish in the near future. The supply is bound to get better as soon as the hoarders and panic buyers run out of income tax return money.

Primers became available today where I live, at $121.99 a brick (10,000).

Then your packaging is as unique as it is cheap.

ALL primers I've seen come in a brick of 1,000; ten boxes of 100.

A CASE is 5,000; five bricks.

I'd be happy to pay $122/case; bricks (real bricks) are $30 and cases about $135.

was in the component business during the last shortage. we had people driving 250miles one way to local gunshows because i had primers. even took some to tulsa that year and sold out within 15 minutes. don't expect prices to come down even when they are available again. the higher price has been established. btw, i was not one of those who jacked up the price but i did limit the amounts at times.

I drove the 250 miles down to the gun show in Phoenix in February solely to pick up primers. I stood in line for 45 minutes but I was able to pick up everything I wanted. But, with the hazmat fees on shipping and/or everyone being out of stock (except for one of the five types I needed), it was well worth the drive and wait. The show before that they were sold out within the first three hours of a three day show.

New old stock Winchester Small Pistol Primers, 10 boxes of 100. Will accept a money order, check or paypal. Shipping is $8.00.
It doesn't matter which type of math you use 10 boxes of 100 will equal 1000 primers.

$123.00 including shipping. Well folks that is only $0.123 for each primer

If I had to guess he misread the ad or had his head up his ***

In the 90's primers got up to $24 p/1000 in my area. I had to pay $39.99 p/1000 for CCI small pistol last week locally. Luckily I have about a years worth of Large rifle, small rifle, large pistol and shotgun on hand yet, so I think it should be back to (reasonably) next year. We are pulling out of Iraq this year aren't we? The gov't should have been able to buy up a pretty good supply over the past 6 months the way the factories have been dedicating their production to them.

Yeah, and then there is Afghanistan which is supposed to pick up not to mention the Korean peninsula about to erupt and, oh yeah, that whole "He is going to be tested thingy" that Biden spoke about hasn't happened yet that is in the offing.

We could be short for a while yet. I hope our stock pile lasts!

WE ALL KNEW WHAT SLICK WILLY WOULD DO AND BOUGHT PRIMERS BY THE 1,000 COUNT BOXES OR 5,000 ROUND CASES. UNFORTUNATELY i GOT SNOOKERED THIS TIME. and WHILE I HAVE MANY OF THOSE LR AND SOME SR PRIMERS LEFT I AM S.O.L. ON PISTOL PRIMERS. I WILL LEARN FROM THIS ONE THOUGH!!!!!!

Dragon,
I don't want to be hard-nosed here but, this is the same attitude that has caused the recent problem.

They are going to have a real up-rising if they ban components. I don't think they are that stupid. I could be wrong though, have been before.

They are going to be available in great quantities in the near future. It would seem to me to be cyclic.

"This too shall pass" seems to come to mind.

I feel what I stated in my earlier post was correct. It is the fear of not being able to get these components that has driven us to purchasing far more than most of normally would that is the nature of the beast. I have no doubt that eventually it will straighten itself out just like the economy will over time that is what free enterprise is all about in a republic. This shortage has been going on for many months now and I expect it will be at least that long before it turns around.I hope it is sooner than later. Remember "Where your treasure is there will your heart be also."

I was in my favorite gun shop Tues. 1 guy asked for primers the woman co-owner asked how many?? ans. how many ya got ?? not a lot and Im trying to give everybody some.
Another guy came in an the same conversation took place.
the husband owner says its due to the war as small pistol and rifle primers are harder to get.and they use them in the 9mm and m-16.
wife owner says its due to everybody stocking up an acccount of Pres. Obama.there was also talk of the manufactures taking a page outta the oil co.'s book,(we got it ,you want it)???

I suspect that this administration will stick with it's fictional support of sportsmen for a while. I think there's agreement that most bank robbers, muggers and mass killers don't spend a whole lot of time at the reloading bench prior to their sprees. Reloading is for sportsmen, and there's essentially no justification for additional laws or regulations. Except, of course, that the left wing wants to disarm everyone except the government, and the government's chosen thugs.
