Primer Shortage?

Take a look at GunBroker.com and the prices that people are paying for all sizes of pistol primers. You may kick yourself for letting them go for $40/1K!

Actully primers can still be found where I live but expect prices to be $45 to $50 a thousand or nearly double what they were before. I've even heard that at some gun shows prices being $75 a thousand. I do think in 3 to 6 months the prices will drop a lot as the manufacturers respond to the current shotage. I worked in manufacturing all of my business career and if there is demand companies respond by ramping up production and will pay overtime to try to reach the demand for their product.

I gave up on gun shows. Friends and neighbors recently went to a couple of So. Cal shows and said there were no reloading supplies, few firearms at decent prices, and almost no ammo for popular calibers. I talked with several suppliers (Federal, etc.) and they say they are running plants 24/7 but can't keep up with demand and that shortage will continue until people stop panic buying and hoarding.

Whats the deal with the shortage of WSP primers? Actually its most primers. The online stores are out and the local shops are all out?

Is it hording or lack of supply?

It is hoarding. Same as with most gun-related items. All my local stores are out of .22 ammo. It sells out the same day it arrives.
Even cleaning supplies. I had to order brushes and patches on the internet.
Lucky me. I bought 3000 each of Federal small pistol and large pistol primers a few weeks ago. One of the stores had 'em, so I stocked up. Glad I did.

I have no problem w/people buying all they want. I understand the free market & have no problem w/that. I've been buying ammo for years using what I call the "box a week plan".

I used the hoarding word incorrectly. Hoard all you wish as well as I will.

My only issue is like what's happening around here/me. You have LGS owners going into a Walmart buying up all the stock & turning around selling it at double to triple the price. You also have people (some that don't even shoot) that get in good w/store managers or associates & get them to hold back supplies so they can scoop it up in order to flip for a profit.

I guess I don't consider that free market when you're getting things put back through connections in order to make a huge profit. I believe that type of activity is wrong & also I'm pretty sure that would be against most companies policies. If you're buying it for you through sources everyone has I see no problem, but that's not what's happening around me anyways. Workers are getting paybacks for holding items in the back.

Maybe I'm wrong, but wanted to just voice how I really felt about the situation & correct how I used the term hoarding.

I have to agree with you. The people that have the money are buying up everything they can get their hands on locally so they shelves at the LGS's are completely bare! Take a look at GunBroker.com and you'll find the people who hoarded hundreds of thousands of components now selling them at huge markups. SPP going for $60 to more than $100/1K. I think that when this shortage finally eases we'll see more people buying components in huge quantiy to put away for the next shortage!

Yesterday my friend who owns a gun store finally received a small shipment of primers and powder from his regional distributor. He was quite shocked by the huge price increase on the primers! His old stock of primers sold out at $2.60 to $3.29 per 100. His cost on the new primers is $39 to $47 per 1,000 and he is marking them at $4.50 to $5.50 per 100. Not exactly a huge profit margin! Powder prices were up about 15%.

Now if he could only get some bullets!

Well I have seen in my local swap and sells, primers posted for $80/brick, and $7 per sleeve.

This has probably been covered but I don't see how those GunBroker sellers are shipping primers without a HazMat certification. Just getting certified isn't cheap.

We all saw what happened after New Town, we're still feeling the results. We also realize that should something like this happen again we're back to square one and these shortages could last into the foreseeable future. People understand this and the "stockpiling" we see is because of an uncertain future.

People buy primers 100 at a time?

Those who bought that way before are the ones without primers now. I have for years told guys in my local club if you are going to buy primers buy a flat of 5000.

We don't see much of those guys these days who only bought exactly what they needed prior to each match. Those that keep a good supply and reload haven't missed a match yet.

I'm pretty sure it's hoarding 'cause I'm still using up primers that I bought in 1994 when the first gun ban was passed!!!!
