Does anyone have any experience with Pro Mag (Promag?) magazines? I have bought several "factory" Smith magazines online and never had an issue. I recently found the ones linked below online and they're considerably less than the $25-$30 the factory mags usually go for online. They look just like factory Smith mags for the 40/9c with the finger extension. Not sure if these Promags are as quality as the "factory" ones, or if they're just fine. Any experience from handgun owners who've tried them would be appreciated. I checked online and couldn't find any information on this for the M&P's.

There are dozens of threads on numerous gun forums about how bad Promag (not to be confused with Pmag) pistol mags are.

In short... Friends don't let froiends buy ProMag pistol mags.

If you want to save money on mags, go to GregCoteLLC's website and buy some ACT-MAG M&P mags. Have run a half dozen through their paces for over a year without a single malfunction. Paid $17 a mag.

I got a ProMag 32 rounder to play at the range with and have had zero issues out of mine. Maybe I am a lucky one

I never have understood why someone would pay $500 for a pistol and then cheap out trying to save $10 on a mag and $25 on a holster.

Point well taken, MichiganScott! I agree that it's not a good idea to cheap-out on one of the most important components of the handgun. Some folks are very frugal I guess. Or perhaps their income isn't that high and a little savings goes a long way. As for me, if I can save $8 per mag on an order of 3 or 4 mags (assuming the quality is good), why not? It would seem in this case that the quality is NOT good, based on the majority of feedback. As far as price, I got a heck of a deal on my 40c. $380 brand new.

Thanks for all of the feedback so far, folks! The members of this community are always very helpful and knowledgeable... it's much appreciated!

Thanks for the tip... I will check that site out!

I think it's more of an issue on where you save the money. How many magazines will you buy for your pistol? I look for deals on things that I use a lot of (bullets, primers, etc) but they only have to work one time. The life if a mag is almost endless (except for a pro mag:rolleyes:) so it's a one time cost. Now if all you shoot is standing in a lane at a range, then it really doesn't matter because if (and when) it fails, the worst that will happen is that you have to pick up all the rounds that fell out of the mag when the baseplate fell off. Now, if you're carrying for self defense (not a good failure) or if you're shooting competition (not good for the score) it's a different story.

another option, though it can be seasonal, is to watch the sites for places like Gander, Cabelas, etc as at times they'll do something like $20 off $100 and at that volume include free ship. I used it for components and even ammo, again was during the last couple months of 2015 so it may not pop up again for awhile, but that is another way to save some coin on the brands one prefers over going with a cheaper alternative.

It's a good thing Magpul doesn't agree with you as they make a fortune on their $15 Glock mags.

When I decided to buy some additional mags for range use (M&P) I took my $200 and had the choice of 12 ACT mags or 7 factory mags. That's not "cheaping" out, that's being an intelligent steward of my available funds. Especially since they have both proven to provide the same level of reliability.

It's not necessarily "cheap out" if you don't know. After all there are aftermarket magazine manufacturers who's product is just as good if not better. Mac-Gar comes to mind. They make excellent mags and are often cheaper than the same mag that's OEM. Sometimes they are even the OEM producer but don't stamp their name on it

My 2 cents, I buy the best I can afford at the time I am shopping. I have a 25$ Jel Tech Kydex Holster that is better made then the 50$ Kydex Holster I bought for my DIL from a bigger Co.! The J.T. is Heavier Kydex and IMO better shaped! So Jel Tech is a 1 man operation and make them 1 at a time, So a better holster.. Cheaper not always bad and Higher $$$$ not always good. IMO people can spend how much they want and if they cheap out they will find out soon!

Usually not the case though. In this instance it seems like someone was just charging more money. I can charge $300 for my holster but value wise it maybe $10. Usually though products are cheap (er) for a reason

Oh yea I agree some cheap items are just that cheap :0 I found that out when buying furniture years ago.. BUT in some cases a item may not be 110% as good but close enough for most ! And also some items that cost more are not as good as a cheaper item! But for the most part I agree with you !
