Probably moving to Sheridan, Wyoming. Anything I ought know?

jimmy: you are right, there is and BB is buried atop Lookout Mountain overlooking Golden. For a while there was an armed guard at his grave site because the City Fathers of Cody, WY claimed he should be buried there and not in Colorado. They were supposed to be plotting the kidnapping of his body. I don't think they ever tried, but the Denver people weren't taking any chances.

I believe the formal name of the Cody museum is Cody Firearms Museum. The Buffalo Bill portion is a dedicated wing with more of BB's memorabilia than you can believe. I was particularly pleased to see what they represented to be the actual rifle that BB named "Lucretia Borgia". I had read of this buffalo rifle several times and never expected to see it. ............ Big Cholla

Gator, no state or local income tax, individual or corporate. Legislature meets every other year and Wyoming may have only one house to legislature? Snow. Snow, Snow. Do you ski? Let's be honest. If you live in SC, and own a .416, it's because you "wanted" it, not "needed" it. You're far more likely to "need" it in griz country, and you'll be a lot closer to that in Sheridan. Myself, I'd be thinking of adding something like a .25-06 to my collection.

I love Wyoming. I wouldn't choose it over where I live, but if I had to move there, I wouldn't be unhappy about it. Wide open spaces, nice people, good gun laws, what's not to like?

Wyoming gets cold in the winter,specially when the wind blows,however it is how they say(God's Country). Absolutely gorgeous state,with all kinds of outdoor activities,great schools,more work opportunities than people think,and a great place to raise a family.
If it was me!I would defiantly take quality over quantity ,and make the move.
Don't listen to negative,stay positive and do it. You are young,if you like to work,and you are not lazy,with five little ones to feed!! You will make it somehow.
As far as the bears,mountain lions,wolves and moose go! I would rather be around those beautiful animals that you mentioned,than be stuck in traffic somewhere in a big city,with a bunch of idiots in their $100,000 imported pieces of garbage , that don't know how to drive,and think they have more right to be on the road than you do for some reason.

One other thing about this area is The Black Hills. I live about half way between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills. Most of the Black Hills is in South Dakota. Really nice place. The Big Horns is a really nice place too, but they are very different. I go to each place for totally different reasons.

The Bear Lodge Mountains around Sundance, WY and Devils Tower are simply an extension of the Black Hills. Both ranges are much older and worn than the Big Horns. By comparison, the tallest peak in the Black Hills, Harney Peak, sits at an elevation of 7,242 ft., whereas Cloud Peak in the Big Horns is over 13,000 ft. above sea level.

I live and play in the Black Hills, but I enjoy getting over to Buffalo and Sheridan to experience the bigger mountains for backpacking and camping. Both sets of mountains are unique and have their own special beauty.

Sheridan is only about a four hour drive from the Black Hills. Head west over the Big Horns and you've got Yellostone NP, Grand Teton NP, the Absaroka Range, and Wind River Mountains all within a day's drive. If you enjoy outdoor recreation, you'll be in heaven.

When you have free time to take in Yellowstone NP, figure on spending at least one full day at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. As others have already mentioned, it is one of the premier western collections on display to the public, and well worth the time. While I'm at it, don't miss the Beartooth Scenic Highway that connects Cody with Red Lodge, MT. That roadway is an awesome piece of engineering, and one of the best motorcycle rides in America.

And of course, there is the "Battle of Little Big Horn NM" or better known as the site of Custer's Last Stand. The battlefield is well presented by the USNPS. I had a huge sense of historical awe on my first visit. There is a national cemetery for our armed services there that was truly humbling for me to walk thru and read the tombstone inscriptions. Be sure and visit the bookstore. I bought a couple of titles re the 'Last Stand" that I wasn't aware of and have now read a couple of times each. I have been so impressed with the presentation of Western history that I have gone out of my way twice to visit the Little Big Horn Battlefield. I will return someday. ......... Big Cholla

I spent a week in the Sheridan/Big Horn area a number of years ago, and it's still the top of my list of favorite places I've ever been. My wife and I both have aging parents that need our help on occasion, and I'm not sure I could stand the winter. Otherwise, we'd move there in a heartbeat. Love the area, the scenery, and the people.

Sheridan is down wind from the mountains and thus it isn't as windswept as most of the state and it's green most of the year.

A feller can put on enough clothes to stay warm, it's not like them places where a feller like me cain't take off enough clothes in the summer to cool down without sending the public into traumatic shock.

Yep, Spotted Horse is a thriving metropolitan area and cultural mecca It's almost as uppity as Ucross. Don't blink or you'll miss both.

So far nobody has mentioned something that is bound to capture your attention besides the magnificent scenery: the wind. It often blows hard coming down off the Northern Great Plains, and 50-plus mph gusts of winds aren't uncommon. Summer thunderstorms can quickly build up over the Big Horns and deliver some awesome lightning and afternoon monsoon rains.

Sheridan has a college, and a great location. As a result, it has a bit more culture than some small towns in WY, and quite a bit of outdoor recreation to offer because of the Big Horn Mountains. You'll like it, but don't expect fresh seafood.

P.S. If you'd like to get the flavor of that part of the world, read a couple of Joe Pickett novels by local area author C.J. Box.

+1 on C.J. Box and Joe Pickett. Both have daughters named for Sheridan. I've talked to C.J. on the phone and just missed him on a visit to Dallas, where he did a signing at Barnes & Noble. Didn't know until too late that he was in town.

I think a .270 or .30/06 is more suitable for Wyoming than a .416, but there are bears, so it'd be useful if you meet a mean one.

Or, you could charge people five bucks to fire it at a local range and have a second source of income. I'm joking, but that might work! A lot of people would be curious what it's like to shoot a .416.

Buffalo Bill Cody is always talked about when people refer to Cody WY, And he is buried in Colorado. If you go to Cody, you can still visit a grave from another old west icon. Jeremiah Johnson AKA Crow Killer, AKA Liver Eating Johnson is buried at Old Trail town in Cody.

P.S. The top of he hill in the background overlooking Cody was where Bill Cody wanted to be buried. When he died in Colorado and they kept his body, it was against his wishes.

I loved Wyoming when I visited there while I lived in South Dakota. Never made it to Sheridan which I regret.

All the previous about Sheridan is true - it is my 2nd favorite place to live in Wyoming (Cody being first).

The legislature meets for 6 weeks each year (fiscal one year, other laws the other) then they go back to their regular jobs. Wonder if the Federal Government could work like that?

I believe one has to be a Wyoming resident for 6 months before they can Constitutional Carry. On another note, need to be a Wyoming resident for one year before you can purchase a resident game or fish license (they do check........)

Drop down to Buffalo and eat dinner at the Occidental. It is the best restaurant for a hundred miles or more.

You might want to take flying lessons and purchase a small plane. Out here we measure road trips in hours not miles.

They can say what they want about the Cold being relative, but Sheridan is in southern Montana...and it is cold there. If you go several miles north of Sheridan you are in MT.
We need a few more intelligent folks up here. Just went over the half-million mark if you can believe the government.
On the plus side there are more folks in the capitol or your state than there are in all of WY. English is spoken here ans a first and second language, we don't have forms in Spanish...yet. There are more traffic signals in Columbia, SC than there are in all of WY. Taxes are cheap, real estate is affordable, except in Jackson, Cody and Buffalo.
Sheridan has all of the conveniences, a Wal-Mart, Perkins, Safeway,
pretty good fair grounds with a couple of gun shows a year, Crazy Woman Liquors.
On the negative side, it gets cold here (there)...really cold., car tags are probably more expensive than in SC, cant't do much until after you have been here for a year...except you must change driver's license, car tags and all of that within 30 days. (Once you get your D/L you can carry concealed without a CCW). No military facilities closer than Rapid City, SD, Great Falls, MT, Cheyenne, WY or Minot, ND. (new ID cards can be gotten at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Billings, MT) You are probably going to go broke the first year buying NEW winter clothes for all seven of you. There is nothing sold in SC that prepares you for one of our Wooly-Buggers if it comes our way.
If there are any specifics that we can help with please ask. Debbie and I are retired Navy and have run into all of the roadblocks facing the military families out here in the Wild West. We did five years in northern MT before coming south into the Banana Belt above Cheyenne.
Please advise when you get here. Maybe a few of us can get together at A Sheridan Gun Show and welcome you Proper Like.

If I was to pick another place in Wyoming to live, it would be Sheridan.

Jackson Hole is the best for view and such, but the billionaires are crowding out the millionaires. There are two WHP's living in Idaho because it's too expensive in Jackson.

So Sheridan is the choice. I'd move there without hesitation.

I agree with you about Jackson Hole. Visited there. Went into a store. Saw a jacket that I liked and was prepared to buy it. The "help" apparently had sized me up as not being wealthy (correctly) and I was ignored as if I didn't exist. OTOH, the way we were treated in Cody more than made up for JH. The folks at Cody were friendly, warm and accommodating. We ended up spending a couple of extra days in Cody because of the way we were treated.

My wife has put in her 20 years with the Navy as of July. Jobs not always being easy to find, she cast a wide net. She has found a job with the VA center in Sheridan, Wyoming. We currently live in Beaufort, SC.

I thought that I was done with snow. Oh well.

We will have five young children in tow.

Apparently I am trading the odd alligator for...big bears...wolves...moose and the odd mountain lion?

I still have my CZ in .416 Rigby. I suppose I might have some use for it...

I understand it is 30 something and raining there today. It is sunny and 94 degrees here. So tell me about Wyoming?

One other thing. You will be the only one within a thousand miles with a gator farm.
