Problem with new M&P, how does yours look? Updated/Solved***

Is anyone else noticing the same issue?
JFR

No. I've had my M&P40 FS since I purchased it new in December 2012. I've shot about 500 rounds so far, all factory ammo:

Win Ranger FMJ 180gr
Win Bonded JHP 180gr
Win FMJ 165gr
PPU JHP 180gr
RWS FMJ 180gr
Rem UMC 180gr
PMC Bronze 165gr

Once you get to the bottom of this, I'll be interested to hear the root cause and solution. Sorry that I don't have any suggestions for you.

Thats an improperly hardened breechface... None of the ammo you mentioned is corrosive, but primer leakage could/can still happen..... non corrosive is really "less corrosive". Leaking primers should not hurt a properly hardened breechface in such a short time..... maybe over a few years of abuse, but certainly not in 3 months. Contact S&W.

I have fired >2000 rounds of 45 ACP (1k of that blazer) in my M&P 45 since February and there is NO pitting, etc..... I am not the most judicious cleaner either :D

That slide will need to be replaced. As I said above I bet it was improperly heat treated at the factory, and I am sure they will warranty it.

I was having the same thoughts as this. I'm sure Smith would be more than anxious to inspect this part.

Looks to be a firing pin problem. If I am seeing it right, each of those primers have a minute black spot on them. That is the hole that is causing the flame cutting of your bolt face. Get ahold of factory service and send the brass in with the gun. They have been pretty quick about turn around times(2weeks or less) on warranty service with me.

Good to hear, I called them yesterday, they are mailing me a FedEx label to send it in.

Question, did you send yours back in the factory plastic case and if so did you get it back?

I've seen several reports with people claiming that it just came back in a box so the didn't get the blue plastic case back.

Use a cardboard box and make sure you remove any non factory accessories you may have installed (they will be removed and replaced with OE parts and you probably won't get the old ones back). Oh, don't send any magazines.

Bump to original post. Problem found and updated in OP.

I purchased a new M&P FS.40 in early April, I've been trying to shoot about every weekend and now have about 1,200 rounds down range. I clean it every week after the range.

Last week I noticed severe pitting on the breech face around the firing pin. I've researched this and all of the history that I found on it pointed back to reloads with leaking primers. This gun has never shot a reload, only factory ammo.

Here's a list of the ammo that has been used...
Winchester USA 165 & 180
Remington UMC
Magtech 180Gr
Blazer Aluminum
Federal 180gr
Federal Am Eagle 180gr
Speer GD 165gr

PROBLEM FOUND/SOLVED

I went back to the range and shot only Winchester USA per my post #10, came back to clean and inspect and no further pitting found.

Three days later I went back and shot only 50 rounds of BLAZER ALUMINUM, picked up some casings and what do you know, blown primers on half of them. I looked at the breach face and the pitting was enhanced.

Now for the good news, As of yesterday it's on its way back from S&W, should arrive on Monday.

When I placed the call to Smith and spoke of the problem they asked two questions, "have you been shooting reloads or Blazer Aluminum?" My reply at the time..., Um excuse me we must have a bad connection, when did you say the mailing label was going out to me?" So the Blazer Aluminum must have been causing issues with others.

Another great S&W customer service story for the books! I'll let you know how it looks once it arrives.

I should post something on the ammo thread, I'll try to do that later.

Mine was from 180gr .40. I plan on calling CCI and CheaperTD whom I made the purchase from next week. I goggled it and couldn't find anything else about it but S&W sure new about it.

I also have the same thoughts as Bobermo, although the primers are not doubt bad, could a hardening issue of the slide also be in play here.

So the question is whether there is a defect in the slide which caused such rapid pitting or if this is normal occurrence with leaky primers even with a properly hardened breech face.

Yup, that be the query.... I am sure S&W will say Blazer =bad and CCI will say Breech face =bad..... the truth will of course, be in the middle.

Another thing I didn't catch before was that this was a 40.... those are high pressure (~36K) or so rounds, that could be a contributing factor, I think I read "gas cutting" somewhere.... we cannot ignore that.

My only experience with blazer has been good, but I have only shot it in 9mm & 45.... both are low (er) than 40..... I would think cleaning would be the make or break issue here, IF we assume primer leakage corrosion.

If we think about the pressure/gas/heat component, that cannot be avoided, nor can the hardness of the breech. For that we will have to wait on S&W to determine what is what....

I will be quite interested to see what the final outcome is.

good bail out.. like asking my wife if she bought a new pair of shoes.... :)

Yeah, I learned from the best on my end, my wife of course.

Who knows maybe S&W packed an invoice in with the new slide. I'd be okay with that also, I just want it back in my hands. They are a great company and I would purchase the same again if needed.

Does anybody know whether CCI Blazer uses these same primers on their brass cased ammo? I think I will stay away from all Blazer ammo (not just the aluminum stuff) until I get a good answer.

I received it back from Smith today, just 16 days from me sending it off. They replaced the slide, no other noticeable changes. No other comments on the work order in the case other than "Replaced Slide" & "Range Tested/Meets Spec".

Once again a great company to own products from.

I called Blazer Ammo today, I spent over 30 minutes on hold with no answer, I also sent them an email via the web site, still no reply.
